Lychee advice
Comments (4)gwenn- occasional temp of 62-65 will likely not cut it for most lychees. i dont think there have been any proper studies on the exact cooling needed to induce flowering- i have heard it said that temps lower than 68 will do it but im sceptical- my hunch is that temps below 60 for a few days straight are needed. I have heard though that there is a lychee species that will fruit in higher temps- think i heard this from ian crown who owns the mangosteen plantation in PR. You may want to follow up with him. plan B would be to grow the tree in a large container and then bring in to an airconditioned room set at 60 degree for a couple of weeks in late december. in theory, that should work....See Morelychee tree drying out, droopy, dying. please help !
Comments (53)I'm so sorry, but, it doesn't look completely dead yet. Your potting mix looks very wet or is it just very black? Young lychee plant don't need the extreme moistness of larger trees does. Carefully pulled out the tree and look at the root ball/system. If they are still whitish and not dark brown. Then the lychee still has a fighting chance. All those leaves will eventually drop or you can pull them off now. It will be a slower process to regrow new leaves, but, if the root system is dark brown, then it is most likely dead. But, whitish roots, still have hope for recovering. Will be slower, but will recovered. I have some young plants like that too, all the leaves died and turned brown. But their root system is still alive, just took longer to recover, after such a stressful period of leaf drops. Hang on to the little guy, it will recover, eventually. Just don't give it water unless you notice the soil is getting on the dry side....See MoreSetting up grow room for Mango/Lychee in basement
Comments (4)I know this is a fairly old post, but I'd like to add a bit of my knowledge. I would suggest buying a Mylar enclosed grow room. IT helps trap heat, and keep bugs out. It also allows you to monitor the exact temperature and humidity within your own container. I also live in the snow and grow tropical plants that need approx 70 with 60-70% humidity. Without ruining the wood or walls in my house, or making my room smell like a butterfly house. Also I went one step further and I use 2x quad band 90watt UFO lights, and 1 tri-band UFO in a tri-force configuration all piled into a 5'x5'x5' grow space. I got a pretty substantial harvest, and my power bill increased approx $30 a month. You can pay the extra for the HID bulbs and my buddies swear by the increased watts that your harvest also increases. So it really depends on the $ ur willing to throw down and to what extent. To me. Let's say 6 months to fruit.. If you have that setup you're probably looking at around 500-600 for a hydro, HID, and depending on your light, you're probably looking at a couple hundred more in power. Is what you're planting worth the investment? Or if you went LED's, it dramatically drops the amount of power consumption and makes that level even more affordable. Also with Led's since they use such a low power. @ some point in the future I want to set up a parallel 12v system tied to a Gear bike generator. So I go and workout in the morning and it powers my grow box. In which you could easily set up for another $200. Enjoy, and any questions or schematics you may want just hit me up....See Morenew pics of lychee and mango developing fruits
Comments (10)jay told me about this- u grow a seedling next to an existing plant. Then while still growing, and without disconnecting it from the seedling, you take a small branch from the small seedling and graft it onto the main plant. Once it takes, you remove all the branches from the seedling except for the branch grafted into the main plant. now all the energy being absorbed by the seedling root system is being directed into the main plant. so you have 2 root systems directing energy into the main plan instead of 1. did i explain it correctly jay?...See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years ago
