first ripe fig of this season

Came off an english brown turkey along the front walk a couple days ago. Several days of rain ripened it before its time, though it was still very sweet. I offered it as almost ripe to a visitor and he said "wait till it's ripe". Sure enough one of those brad pitt birds gave it a single peck an hour later. Still it weighed in at 73.4 grams and was delicious :)

My earliest this year has been the variety Osage with fruits on some of the trees ripening and beginning to fall. (Hoping the stinkbugs will continue to stay away from this fruit as it loses its protective astringency, having seen some already on my ripening nonastringent kakis.) Season here is lagging a little behind last year's unusually early harvest.

Gorgeous fig! I'm jealous, I don't think I'll have even ONE edible fig this year. All my early figs shrivelled up and dropped, as did most of the leaves on my tree. I have 2 figs on the tree right now that developed later, but already we are having nights in the 40's- so I'm not very hopeful.

Alright, I'm back with an approximate time-frame. The blooms which would eventually become these fruit were present on the tree last year February 17th. So let's add another month to that date, plus some wiggle room, and we'll say that this fruit took about 10 months to fully ripen. Josh
