Dead Zone in Garden ... what might be causing this?

Along the back edge of my house facing southwest is a 6' x 40' border under the shade of a maple and cherry tree (sun maybe two hours in the morning). The area is home to a half dozen each of pine bushes and boxwoods doing well. (Photo shows conditions) When I moved in 7 years ago there was a 4" boxwood stump in the middle. I cleared the stump and planted a rhodo which took a summer-and-a-half to die, followed by another rhodo which lasted one summer, then a laurel for a summer-and-a-half and now the second laurel. The last time, I dug out the soil for about 3'x3'x2' deep and replaced it was new soil, shredded pine park, acidifier. I check the moisture with a meter and water it maybe every other day. It seemed to thrive for two months, but now it's showing signs of stress. Like the others, the problem starts with one or two stems going completely bare and then two or three more and then the entire shrub. What could I be doing wrong? What to try next?

But back is dying off:
