Places to visit in Duluth
Comments (7)Picking up that booklet is a great suggestion--thank you for thinking of that sjmarq--I think we stopped at a visitor center a long time ago when we visited Duluth with our kids years ago but of course I didn't even think of that this time. Two years ago we also had a baseball tournament there but the games were scheduled so crazy that we didn't have much time to get to places in between during the day time. This year our team has a game at 8:30 in the morning and then not again until 5:30 in the afternoon and then not again until 1pm the next day so I'm hoping to fit in lots of sight seeing in between. The garden centers mentioned in the earlier postings will be a must from looking at their web sites. Thanks again for the suggestions sjmarq. Deb...See MoreFall collecting trip
Comments (5)Thanks for the ideas and recommendation. A little additional thought behind our madness--our home is located in what would be bitterbrush/bluebunch wheatgrass (a developer tore out the last of the bitterbrush two years ago from across the road). However because we add an additional 20 inches (60cm) of water during the summer (mostly out of fire danger concerns) all rules about native plants are out. Consequently, we've broken our yard down into collections. Otherwise we're just battling a contingent of European meadow grasses. One such grouping is oaks species, another is continental grassland. Part of the fun in assembling these collections is visiting the habitats of origin and collecting material where legal. We often end up buying seed from legitimate sources when we can't otherwise get it. For example, we considered simply purchasing bur oak seedlings originating from the western edge of its range, but that misses a real life exposure to the plant community....See MoreMust-See Wineries and other Interesting Places to Visit?
Comments (2)Matti5 mentioned V Sattui. It is in the Napa Valley between Rutherford and St. Helena. It's sort of kitty corner across the street from Dean & Deluca. V Sattui makes a LOT of different wines, and they do have a great deli. Beware, though, that the place is EXTREMELY crowded on weekends -- so much so that it's difficult to find a place to park and they have a huge parking lot. They do a barbeque on weekends, too. You say you've been to Imagery. A little farther up the same main driveway is Arrowood. It's wonderful to sip wine while sitting on on the back veranda while enjoying the view. :-) In your original post about where to dine, I mentioned the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville. And as I said in that thread, the winery is worth visiting because it's awesome. Lots of movie memorabilia, a beautiful pool and patio, and lots of great wines. Francis himself might even be wandering around. :-)...See MorePacific Northwest Road Trip - Which Nurseries To Visit?
Comments (14)I have done this trip(s) and agree with all of the above. However if I had to pick 2 or 3. Near Portland, I would visit Iseli's display garden, (make sure you have an extra memory card for the camera) . If you have time I would drive out to Mt Hood, (it is not a garden but it is impressive to see such an impressive mountain ). Portland Japanese Garden is also very impressive ( and a great view of the city) . If any one in your family like water falls - Some of the best waterfalls near Portland, Oregon, exist in the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area east of the city. The scenic area protects at least 77 waterfalls that include horsetail, tiered and plunge formations. Five of the falls are within a 45-minute drive of Portland. The Oregon garden is very nice, but it is south of Portland and a long drive. ( save it for next time) Then in Seattle - you should visit the Market and the surrounding area, try to fit in a ride on any of the ferries. Gardens in Washington Kubota Garden, Coenosium (Nursery) , Coenosium Rock Garden at South Seattle Community College. You probably will not have time but a drive to the Olympic National Park is definitely worth it. I have the American Conifer Society to thank for introducing me to the PNW many years ago and have returned a few more times. I have seen all the many nurseries and gardens mentioned above and many I did not include. Have a great trip = Mike...See Moresummersrhythm_z6a
