No clue about 'beige undertones' or what that means, but. . .

No, it's not a clash of cool and warm. Agreeable Gray belongs to the yellow hue family. Extra White is the green-yellow hue family. They're analogous, they go together by technical default.

Here they are on a color wheel so you have some context of hue family and color spectrum. You can always try a white from the same hue family as Agreeable Grey and see if you like that better; a few options follow in the second image.

Thank you Lori, You helped me before with a similar issue where my Devine White was making the Extra White trim look a little green in the evenings. Based on what you put up above (and thank you for taking the time to do that), if I do the cabinets in the extra white as well then based on where they are at on the wheel the cabinets may also look a little greenish against the agreeable grey as its such a large area? What about SW 7661 Reflection? The umber in the sample of Agreeable is 9 but in the Reflection its only 1. Does that bring it over closer to the cool side on the wheel? He really wants the cabinets in Extra White. I am trying to find a greyish color that does not have the green or pink undertones. How does one find out where in the wheel a color lives?

Lori....um WOW!! What an incredibly detailed response. I am a numbers person. I read code. So when I see sample A has black and umber and sample B has the same amount of black but more umber, then the logic side of my brain (small that it is) would assume that less umber in B would bring it closer to a cooler color. Okay throwing that out the window now.

Appreciate the "real" skinny on undertones and they also make sense.

When I look at a color I prime and paint (2 coats) a sample board usually 2' x 2' and then traipse around the house with it at different times of the day (drives hubby nuts). I have enough samples from SW to paint a battle ship (literally). I am comfortable in the beige zone and I am trying to break out of it, grey was our compromise.

One thing I did read up on today was influence from other items in the room or outside the window on a particular color. The Reflections looked kinda "icky" (highly technical term) on one wall and then the hubby pointed out that the door 3 feet from it was sill a yellow color.

You have certainly given me lots to think about and look at when choosing colors now. I really appreciate the time you took to answer all the questions.

All I know is I have SW Worldly Gray and SW Extra White in my kitchen/living room/dining area and they go great together. Worldly Gray is a light gray with beige undertones. It was my builder's recommendation and it is beautiful.

On the SW website they pair Agreeable Gray with Extra White as coordinating colors.

Everybody assumes formulas and colorants hold clues to help predict what a color will look like once it's up. The formula is on every can, so why wouldn't they think there's some kind of hidden code in there? It is logical, and sometimes it might work out and prove to be true. Unfortunately, reading the formula is inconsistent and super sketchy due to substance uncertainty and the huge variety of colorants and bases out there.

If more people understood spectral data and how reliable it is, and how easy it is to use, they'd drop the flaky formula schtick like a hot potato.

If numbers don't scare you, then watch this video and I'll show you a way to determine hue family without visually comparing to hue parents. We use the spectral data on easyrgb.com to look up the hue family for any paint color in their library. You'll need this color wheel.

My programmer brain is in "aha" mode. Thanks for taking the time to show this and share your color wheel. I looked up a couple of colors that I had in mind for other rooms and I was actually surprised by some of the hues, and the distances between some of the pairings. This would certainly help with the cool vs warm debacle that I usually end up with. Some are obvious ie yellow vs blue but when you are faced with that wall of chips at the paint store and are in full analysis paralysis mode they just start to look the same. Then you take the sample home and its like um NOPE!! not gunna work. That website is a treasure trove of information...and not just for paint. This will certainly help with the rest of the house. I wish there were a way to sticky this. Sooooo how good are you at choosing tile??? :P. Again, thanks for taking the time to delve into the hows and where's and the why's.

You are very welcome! Tile is no different from paint, if it has a color it has a hue parent and basic rules of harmony apply. Easyrgb does publish A LOT of spectral data and if you know how to apply it to choosing color for the built environment, it's a website you can't live without.
