Scherrs vs Ikea vs Kraftmaid or other
Comments (33)Ikea uses metal boxes. My guess is that it is the lower grade of Tandembox from Blum since Ikea uses Blumotion for drawer runners. Tandemboxes come in lacqured metal or stainless steel. Tandemboxes can be used with their Orgaline of drawer inserts that look very much like Ikea drawer inserts. I am not sure if Blum makes the ones that Ikea uses or not. But... If you wanted to change the standard dovetail hardwood drawers with Tandembox from Blum, a typical custom cabinet maker considers that an upgrade and charges quite a bit for the Tandemboxes. So what you are getting with the Ikea is an upgrade from the standard drawers. HOWEVER, you do get the MDF boxes which is considered "less" durable than plywood. (I am just quoting the industry saying.) So Ikea boxes/drawers are a mixed bag in terms of "perceived" quality... Having said that, I really like the Tandembox drawers and I only looked at custom cabinet makers that offered that option. I think it is a HUGE functional improvement from the standard dovetail boxes because the accessories are so well designed and easy to use. I would say to go for it with the Ikea boxes with custom fronts. Let us know how it turns out. (I considered that option seriously for us. I actually picked the custom route for myself.) http://www.blum.com/pdf/BUS/3063_tbx_fb/3063_tbx_fb.pdf...See MoreKompy? Kraftmaid vs. Medallion colors?
Comments (17)Hi Charlikin, Was a great appt. I've been working with this great family from another state away. I carry a line that they wanted and it's worked out well. Cashew is close to natural, but not so 'bare' looking, if that makes sense. It's a nice color. Cashew is definitely more yellowy/pink than sesame. Wheat is closer to natural. And I agree with neverdunn....the sesame is gray and dull. I'm not a huge fan of it, standard or burnished. Burnished or Frosted (glazed) finishes in Medallion are 18% for Designer Series and 14% for Designer Gold series. Finally, here are the pictures that I promised to post. They are clickable thumbnails. KM Toffee - Med. Hazelnut Small samples: MED Harvest Bronze CHERRY (left) - MED Hazelnut Burnished KM Toffee - Med Chestnut (big doors) KM Toffee - Med Chestnut KM Toffee - MED Chestnut - Hazelnut -Harvest Bronze Cherry (small sample) KM Toffee - MED Chestnut - Hazelnut - MED Chestnut Frost - Med Harvest Bronze Cherry (small sample) The last two are against my Medallion Alder display in Hazelnut Burnished. You can see what a difference the hazelnut is on the maple compared to the alder. Maple is very yellow, alder not so much. It was hard to get photos without a lot of glare and not using a flash. The best ones were the ones that I layed out on the floor and took from above. Hope this helps!!! KOMP...See MoreAmish built cabinets vs. Kraftmaid
Comments (34)When asking such a question many things depend on the answer. Not all Amish cabinets are build and made the same. Just like every carpender does not do the same quality of work. If you are just looking at the price factor that is going to be easy. Go for the cheaper price. But if your looking at the entire picture ask yourself these questions: Can I get a replacement part and or will they still be around in a year if I have a problem? Is the entire cabinet construction the same. What are the sides, backs, drawer boxes, shelves, and glides made of? Finish.....THIS IS HUGE usually a factory baked on finish will surpass any local shop as they have perfected the process and have years doing so. But that isnot to say a local guy cant do a great job. But in time you want to make sure the finish will remain as nice as they day you had it installed. This is a huge issue I have seen in the past. Custom sizes, most companies (in the lower end) use 3" sizes. Custom cabinet makers can help so fillers may not be needed as often. Ask to look at jobs they have done 6 months ago to a longer and see how the cabinets are holding up. I also have to add the point that KraftMaid is not your only option in this price point. Home centers offer that line and consumers feel they are getting a great value bc its a big box center. Only to be let down they have forgotten items and have a HUGE damage rate. If its about price I have to be honest when a client asks me to match the home centers I love it. I make more money. The home centers have won your hearts and deceived your minds in thinking big box discounts are only to be found there. Most small business can offer you a good quality cabinet for the same price and maybe even less. Educate yourself on another line and before you buy be sure your getting all the items you need and things will not be an add on later. Another line you should consider is Waypoint. I found they are a better value than KraftMaid and drop ship to your house. I never lost a job on price when quoting this line. I hope this helped and consider all your options :)...See MoreKraftmaid vs Diamond vs Barker vs
Comments (9)KM has several lines. I'd bet that that is the lower specified line with an Evercore door. That's the only way to get it that much cheaper than Diamond. What is the box construction and corner braces? It can still create a beautiful kitchen in the hands of a skilled designer. The big risk is that box stores rarely have skilled designers. You may want to hire a KD separately to do the design, and just give that to the store designer. There are a lot of ways to get it wrong. Every time I think I've seen it all, someone creates a better mess up! Here's a kitchen that I did in the lower spec'd line....See MoreDrB477
