I had a big frog of that size for 2-3 years in my little 200 gallon pond. He never bothered the fish, except when he'd take down a bird too big for him to eat and I'd have to fish the bird out of the pond. Trust me, he was eating these birds. I found him with a baby in his mouth once, and one time I found a dead bird I placed it next to the pond. Next morning the bird was back in the water. Only critter that would do that was the froggie. My frog wandered off this spring, my neighbors saw him on their deck. Took pictures and wondered where he came from. Wish he'd wander back. I have another frog in my pond but I very rarely see him, he hides under my bridge so when I do maintenance I see him hop away.

My green anoles are making a comeback, too. I think the reason is two-fold. I've been eliminating Cuban treefrogs, AND the green anoles are adjusting to living with the brown Cuban anoles (sorry...another "Cuban" import, though who knows if the name is even accurate). I have heard that the green anoles are learning to keep to the higher ground and leave the lower areas more for the brown ones. (Beth, they are exotics, sadly, and for awhile were really wiping out the green anoles.) I definitely noticed more green anoles when I went on the warpath 5 years ago against the Cuban treefrogs, who eat them (and anything else they can catch.) But sadly, like you, Nativemel...no green treefrogs. My son has them in his yard in abundance in Gainesville, where the CTF's don't seem to be making as much headway. I'm thinking about relocating a few tadpoles from his yard to my pond and seeing if I can reintroduce them to my yard that way. Now that there are fewer CTF's here, seems like it might work. Marcia

If it's Francee, it's small, but I've only had it since last May. So, we may be looking at an immature Francee. If so, it really loves my house, as usually, Francee is supposed to have moderate growth. It's probably not Green Gold, as GG is supposed to come up with yellow edges. this one is white. Allan P. McConnell does not have a glacous (sp?) underside, this one does. I don't remember if it's fragrant. We'll see in August. When you try to ID one, you're struck by how many possibilites there are. With 4,000 known varieties, how many unknown varieties are there? Thanks guys, it makes this one more interesting. bkay

It is indeed a male Bullfrog. He has likely taken up at your home due to his disability. They do go to the bottom of the pond and hibernate in the mud, but if there is no mud bottomed pond, you could take him indoors for the winter and feed him crickets. He may be able to hop pretty good, but he is a little bit a lightweight, and I suspect that he has a little trouble feeding himself. This disability may make it difficult for him to take the insects he feeds on effectively. I would try and augment his diet with crickets from the bait shop or pet store and see if he gets a little fatter. You will want to dust the crickets with reptile vitamins. With his injury, he will be unable to fend off predators, and will likely get eaten at a big pond, and if he makes it to winter, may not have enough fat stored to make it through. If it were me, I would take him in and try to make his life easier, but some are in favor of nature taking its course (which would likely be curtains for the frog). If you would like any info about how to help him, let me know; I have kept many amphibians over the years, when teaching Environmental Ed. He may also need antibiotics, to stave off infection in the stump. Unlike salamanders, frogs cannot regrow limbs. BTW: The external ear, called a tympanum, is larger than the eye, making him a male.
