I missed most of them but here are some pics
Comments (8)I am new to the midwest and very much enjoying my new husband's peonies - but I too went away for a couple of days and a thunderstorm took most of the blooms. We have only 6-8 plants, I guess, about 10 ft worth and I would like to plant all around the foundation. Is fall the right time? Any hints on how, or exotic but easy to grow types? Should I just do a couple a year and see how they fill in? thanks, Teresa...See MoreAuburn Peony Project
Comments (3)That was my piece on VG. The Auburn project is trialing tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) in the deep south. Herbaceous peonies, which it sounds like you're craving, are a different complex of species and hybrids. But good news -- you can grow those big old fashioned types you long for here in the south. The trick is to pick the right varieties. In general, go for early blooming types. The later the bloom period, the less successfully that cultivar does in our heat. Some of the oldest and most tried-and-true cvs are quite happy in our climate. Here's what's done well for me: Festiva Maxima (white) Bowl of Beauty (Jap with rose pink petals, creamy yellow staminodes) Red Charm (a wonderful true red, but be prepared to pay through the nose) Kansas (rosy red double, very reliable) Shirley Temple (blush daughter of Festiva Maxima) Paula Fay (bright pink semi double) Mons. Jules Elie (light pink) All the above are more or less fragrant. Festiva Maxima and Shirley Temple are intensely fragrant. I haven't grown them, but a friend near me has Coral Charm and a yellow (I believe it's an intersectional peony, a tree-herbaceous cross) that both do great. The yellow one costs dearly, but it's spectacular. Marty...See Morelost Bead Babies pattern sets
Comments (0)I once had a set of patterns that were for baby-quilt blocks. They were little characters made from wooden beads strung on strings, these characters were doing typical children's activities (riding a stick horse...). After I made a woman a photo copied set, she came to visit me and stole my original set as well. (She had never given any indication she would do something like that so I felt no need to keep them out of sight). There were nine patterns in the set and it came out in the 50's. Any ideas where i might find another set. She stole three different pattern sets, but that was the oldest and the one I missed the most....See MoreWhat gene did you miss out on?
Comments (42)While skimming through everybody else's answers, I saw several genes that I don't have ... but most of them, I don't miss. I can't sing on tune, but love to sing ... so I do it anyway. I can't visualize how to "pull a room together" decorating-wise, so I paint and buy curtains and that's about it. And the physical gene? Nahhhhhh ... doing physical stuff makes you hot and sweaty and I'd just as soon bypass that. The gene that I don't have, and really wish I did, is the nurturing gene. I tend to just be oblivious to the needs of loved ones & friends. I'll do just about anything for someone, but ya gotta TELL ME you want it done. Otherwise I just don't realize that you need it....See Moreseil zone 6b MI
