Help, I am killing a mini rose
Comments (5)Roses are NOT house plants. Put it outside. You may need to gradually introduce it to outdoor temperatures if it is very cold, so it is not shocked going from a warm house to freezing outdoor temperatures. If you have an unheated sunporch where it can have some protection in making the transistion to the outdoors, that would be a good spot for a while. If you don't want to take it out of the pot, dig a hole in the ground in a very well drained location and "plant" it, pot and all, until spring. At that time you can repot it to a bigger pot or plant it in the ground. Those mini roses that people buy usually have 4 plants per pot, so you can split them into 4 plants or into 4 pots or whatever. Roses are not appropriate plants for dorm rooms--get your DD an Aspidistra ("Cast Iron Plant") or Sanseveria that can handle indoor conditions and neglect....See MoreI wish grocery store minis were named!
Comments (18)That's because of the difference in conditions, Kitty. Those little potted roses are bred and propagated in controlled greenhouse conditions. Then you bring it home and put it outside in totally different conditions and the rose performs completely different. And not all of them are minis either. Some of them are just small because of the conditions they've been grown in and when you get them home and plant them they turn out to be pretty good size roses instead of the mini you thought you bought. You have to remember that they actually breed and sell these to be throw away plants like a cut flower bouquet. They've probably never been tested in outdoor conditions. Most purchasers treat them that way too because they don't understand that they're regular roses and can be planted outside. I hear people in the stores all the time saying things like "Oh, look, a toy rose! Isn't it cute." They take it home, stick it in a window and throw some water at it occasionally (if it's lucky) and when it dies they toss it out. Which is exactly what the seller wants because then you'll come back and buy another one. I've had a few over the years. Some I did manage to ID others I never could. The best one I've had is my Isolde Hit rose that my brother got me one Valentine's Day. (I've trained him very well and he actually got it at a local nursery, so it was healthy, and with a name tag!) It's lasted 3 winters now and is growing and blooming very well. The others didn't winter well and dwindle away. But I've also found that the chances for survival are better if you don't try and split them up when you plant them. Every one that I tried splitting out and planting dies almost immediately from shock. Isolde I left as is and it thrived from the get go....See MoreParade mini rose from Trader Joe's
Comments (13)Definitely transplant it into a pot with a quality potting soil. It should be ok. Not so sure about the annuals around it. For now, I think it would be better off alone in a pot. It has been through a lot in its life, so transplant alone for now is probably best. If it's really small, annuals might grow up and overwhelm it. Also, not a giant pot, just upsized from whatever it is in now. Full sun after a day or two in the shade. Clip off spent roses as they die off. Just my 2 cents....See Moremini rose given as bday gift
Comments (3)Roses are outside plants so it should be moved to an outside location that receives morning sun. Most of the minis are sold with multiple plants in one tiny pot so they're already rootbound and need to be transplanted into one larger pot or separated into one pot per rootball. These little roses can also be susceptible to mites so making sure you clean the leaves top and bottom with water every few days will keep the foliage clean and the mites controlled. Also, make sure the container is draining properly. If the plant is rootbound, the water is passing right through without getting taken in by the roots. If the pot isn't draining, the roots are sodden and can't take in oxygen. If the water is pouring right through, I often place the pot in a saucer for a few hours to make sure the water wicks back into the roots. If the pot isn't draining, haul the plant out immediately, wash the nastiness off the roots and transplant them into clean pots with clean potting soil. Hopefully, you'll have caught the damage in time to keep from losing the rose. No matter what, you probably need to transplant the rose ASAP....See Moreseil zone 6b MI
