Need fast growing tall annual for full sun
Comments (7)Even though I'm years late to this conversation, because this is the first result to come up on Google search for "fast growing tall annual", let me suggest the castor plant and some okra plants. They get to be 7ft+ tall within a year....See MoreNeed suggestions for early blooming white in full sun
Comments (9)What I want is a white clematis that will bloom with the rose and another that will bloom after the rose and the white clem are done. Or just one for after the rose is done. I have John Huxtable in another area and it is blooming now. I like it but it blooms too late to go with 'Night Owl'. I also have 'Polish Spirit' paired with the rose 'Awakening' and I like it alot. I could do something like it for the later bloomer. I think I have to go with a group 2 if I want an early bloomer to go with the rose bloom time. In that case I checked out a couple of websites and these might work: Duchesse of Edinburgh Matka Siedliska Snow Queen Anna Karolina Matka Teresa Sylvia Denny Unfortunately, Guernsey Cream doesn't like that much sun so it doesn't go on the list. Then for the late blooming clematis from group 2 I'd like something in the darker pink/reds like Warsaw Nike. I think I need to stick to group 2s for both of them to make pruning them easier if I go with two. I know most rose growers like to use group 3s with their climbers so they can prune them down when they prune the roses. If I give up on the idea to use an early bloomer with the rose then I can go with a group 3 for the summer show. In which case the choices could be: Abundance Brocade Mme Julia Correvon Polonez Royal Velours Slowianka Does anyone grow these? Are they good choices?...See MoreSuggestions for low maintainence, full-sun, partly medicinal area
Comments (5)Lavender is also a great blooming medicinal, though I have trouble keeping them looking like a neat mound. The Spanish lavender in particular has nice flowers. California poppy will reseed here and come back year after year. Fennel, anise, and dill are annuals but liked by butterflies. Lovage is a perennial or biennial. If you have room for vines you can plant the runner bean, which has red flowers that attract hummingbirds, and beans that can be eaten as snaps when young or as shellies when mature. Some perennial medicinal vines include Schizandra chinese, Polygonum multiflorum (Fo Ti or Ho Shu Wu), and Hops, Humulus. Tough perennials- Lady's Mantle, Alchemilla, will reseed freely, very freely, and can be used as a tea, as can Achillea millefolium (yarrow). The PNW has lots of "weed" medicinals too, like Self-heal, Prunella, which has been developed into named varieties; Cleavers; Ribwort Plantain; Stinging Nettle; Red Clover; even the lowly dandelion. Of course they grow and multiply like weeds.:-) Here is a link I googled, in Seattle. Comments (5)I have the same problem, my window boxes are in full sun and on the second storey to boot. A complete pain in the neck to maintain and water. Last year I added water crystals to the soil and it did help quite a bit, allowing me to water every few days rather than daily. This year I am planting angelonia in purple shades as I had them in a smaller container and they really thrived in full sun. Angelonias are also known as summer snapdragons, and I'm hoping they're not the ones you're having problems with, I'll have to find another plant! edited to add that in my zone they bloomed from mid May and survived the first frost of late October, but died on the second frost. To me, that's a long blooming plant! Also I'm going to try either creeping jenny or sweet potato vine to spill over and to hide the bottoms of the angelonia. Good luck!...See MoreMatt S
