Hello, Dr. Lockhart,

My name is mybrownthumb6b and I have a few questions regarding HVX's ability to remain infective in soil for 2+ years. Does the virus have to have living plant material to remain infectious or is it residing and remaining infectious in dead plant debris? There seems to be a lot of confusion surrouding this issue.

Thank you for you time,

to me

mybrownthumb6b,

It is possible that your reference to infectious HVX survival in soil may have been deduced from our AHS project report stating that test plants were infected after two years. The wording of this report may not have been clear. The plants that were HVX positive in the second year of the field trial tested negative at the end of the first year. This very probably means that root infection occurred much earlier than the virus could be detected in leaf tissue rather than the virus having retained infectivity in the soil for two years.

Sincerely,
Ben Lockhart
