DD is sick

She has foot hand and mouth disease. She has blisters on the soles of her feet and in between her finger. Her throat was really sore but that is better. The doctor put her on some real strong pain killers. They said all of the blisters have to come out. It could take 2 weeks. We were going to visit her on Friday, but now we are going down to Georgia first and then up to Michigan. Does anyone know anything that would help her, she is miserable.

No experience, but I don't see a lot of self help steps not even Mayo Clinic website. Lots of fluids and dairy may be easier than acidic juices or soda. Water of course. Rest, and pain meds.

Do you understand this is contagious?

Hi all, It's really amazing to see how differently this is being treated in various parts of the country! I got back to my HMO (Kaiser) to get more info on this. DD was not swab tested; Kaiser is doing phone diagnosis in order to keep sick folks at home. So I can't say with 100% confidence that yes, dd has H1N1, though the doctor had no doubt. My concern was the public health aspect of it. Shouldn't they close the camp? Tell more people? Well, when I talked to Kaiser today they said that about 25-35% (!) of the children in the San Francisco Bay Area currently have swine flu, and they are just telling them to stay home. They are not testing or doing any camp closures, etc. (School has been out for ten days or so here.) This is because (according to Kaiser) the swine flu is not as dangerous as had been thought a couple of months ago. (I'm still concerned about those with immune problems. Do they know that 1/4 of the kids running around are sick??) Would they be taking this more seriously if 1/4 of adults were out sick? Also, Kaiser's policy is no Tamiflu, primarily because they suspect that if people take it now the virus will become more resistant (esp. when it comes around in the winter, which seems the primary concern.) Well, staying home when you're sick is good policy in any case, but for those parents who are working and don't have alternate child care, what appears to be (initially) a mild illness is not sufficient reason to keep their kids out of camp (esp. when the kids really want to go.) I don't want to cause hysteria or anything, I just feel people should realize that this is not a one-in-million chance thing. This flu may be milder than they thought, but my dd has never been so sick. The fever did last for four days, not dipping below 102 even with acetaminophen, and it is still over 100 and she is listless, tired and coughing constantly. BTW, in the past three days the the CDC has upped the number of cases in my county from ONE to over 1,000 - and there has been one death.

Wow, I forgot I shared that Tx. She walked down the hall... then came back, asked "is SD going to be ok if I oust her from 'that' room" and I said "oh, no, sorry, you and dad are in DD's room". And then continued what I was doing. I didn't even look at her. But the energy sure was weird! I could "sense"/"hear"/"feel" her muttering to dad.... She slept in the spare room last night and DD and Gpa slept in DD's room. DH told me not to put her in there but I just didn't feel up to anything. I did not change the sheets or make the bed though. Usually I would. But I am just barely well right now. When they came back last night I said "there's homemade chicken soup in the fridge" and they weren't interested so I directed them to a nearby restaurant. Yay me. I was up coughing all last night. This virus will not go away. hahahaha the funniest thing happened though. SM came in the house last night and then I heard her and dad talking and she said something and then he said, I have to get the bags out of the car first and then she said, oh, well, are you going to want me to help with that? and he made this noise... huh-ma-gib-a - ish noise and she said "oh, (trilling laughter) of course you're going to want me to help" AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Bi-zotch! Quick Poll: Would any of you just expect your DH to carry all the bags in? If so, is that because you have a physical condition or a pre-set division of labor and you will be doing something else that is contributing to getting "it" done (whatever you need to do as a family to get ready/settled) In other words, would you ever go somewhere on vacation and be sitting on the couch yapping while your DH carried all of the bags in the house?

tib, here's the thing: I think most of us took what OP stated as the truth, and people were answering her as if that were the facts. Yes, there are always two sides (and, somewhere in the middle is the truth) but, all we had was one side, and it did seem you were questioning her parenting, which is a very touchy road to go down anyway. Yes, I think we all agree that there ARE parents who keep their kids home excessively. But, I think we were giving OP the benefit of the doubt, her child was really sick and it does happen that kids can get sick more in one school year than other year's. My son's 1st grade year (he was seven) he was absent more than other years because of some stomach thing going on-we never really found out why-but it went away, thank goodness. So, I guess, as a parent, I do understand the OP viewpoint. You questioned it right off. Yes, RNmomof2 stated it also in a way, but, she didn't go on and on and on... So, my question is, why were you questioning her in the first place? She told you her child was sick and that is why she was absent. I think the OP, as a concerned parent, would have written a different question, if she thought her child was anxious, as you were questioning her. THIS teacher was clearly out of line making comments like that, surely you see that. OP was not making a blanket statement about all teachers. That's what gets me as far as asking about a personal issue on these boards-some people want to turn it around and make it about something else entirely-which is why I don't post things like that anymore-there are just people out there like that and have the right to do so, and it's exhausting. So, I choose not to participate in "that" way anymore. Tib, I think you have some wonderful thoughts and are a good person and I do like to read your posts-so this isn't personal, just my point of view.

We have a church get together on Saturday night, then church Sunday and our DS & DIL and granddaughter will be coming for dinner. I need to get out and do some yard work - having a baby in the house every day makes it harder to do that during the week! I did manage to put together some Block lotto squares this week and will sandwich that - maybe get some of the quilting done on it. Linda, I am so sorry you have so many people sick in your family. I hope they find out what is going on with your daughter! Theresa - so glad you will get your machine back - I hope it works perfectly! I have a Pfaff and hate when it has to go into the shop. Hand, foot, and mouth disease should ease after 7 to 10 days. Its a viral infection and is contagious by contact or exposure with body fluids.

No knowledge but I really feel for your DD. This is supposed to be really painful.

Maybe some movies for her to watch?

That's too bad. How old is she? Every few years it goes through the schools here and lots of kids get it.

My daughter had it at around age 4 or so. The Dr. put her on some sort of antiviral that helped some. I remember having to buy baby food as that was all she could eat. If she has mouth sores there is a special mouthwash she can use. She can ask her doc about that. Hope she feels better soon.

For the mouth blisters, you might try an over the counter product called Gly-Oxide. It's great for the little canker/herpes sores.

It may bring some relief. You can get it at a drug store.

It is extremely contagious so be sure she is bleaching and hot washing everything. I got a spray bottle and filled half with 90% alcohol and the rest with water and I spray everything with it while I have the staph infection. Even the air around me. I have lots of alcohol swab pads stacked around. On the sores she can use a betadine liquid to help reduce them and keep them clean. She can get over the counter benzocain ointment which will numb the area a little and reduce the pain. I got all of that at my CVS. I bought a bag of the square makeup removal pads and use those to apply the betadine. I also bought a box of sterile surgical type gloves to try not to contaminate anything.

Best of luck to her I hope hers heals up quickly.

My friends little girl had it I think it took about 2 weeks to run its course, I have no knowledge of the disease myself. Prayers for a quick recovery.

DD had it when she was 5 or 6, possibly picked up from a trip to the aquarium. She was uncomfortable, but not excessively so. Seems to me it didn't last too long, and the rest of us didn't get it.
