Crossing Christmas Cactus with Thanksgiving Cactus
Comments (52)Thanks, puglvr! It's maybe not as bloomy as the parents, but once I get it repotted and pruned next spring we'll see how it does then. If it doesn't shape up, out it goes. juliana, maybe we would have to do it after you get back, or try to fit in a mailing before you go. I have to look at the weather before May 15, but sometimes it can work earlier than that. Just remind me about it in April and we'll go from there. I'm thinking of repotting all my cc's and giving them a prune job, so it wouldn't be hard to put a couple of the trimmings in an envelope. Anyway, earlier would fit better for me if the weather cooperates. Once it's nice out, I had better be done with the fussing with the house plants because the acre veg garden calls....See MoreChristmas Cactus Color Change
Comments (19)sue@Arizona I have an 11 year old Cactus which has been kept in southeast facing kitchen window, I do not move this plant and it has bloomed just beautiful year after year. The plant has never been repotted and only gets fertilizer every two weeks from Oct 1st until first buds appear on Dec 1st. The color has always been red until this year. I now have a few white blossoms on the same stems as the red ones? No other plants are in the house. During the summer I noticed a different plant sprouting in the pot so I let it grow and it turned out to be a Vinca plant which I have manyf outside the house color being fuscia. Not sure how or where this plant got into my Christmas cactus as the window does not open and no other plant around. Any idea why I have a few white blooms on my cactus?...See MoreFirst Time Cactus Owner! Moon Cactus Rotting? SOS!
Comments (20)Hi! So I'm a newbie to the cacti parenting world and was hoping someone may be able to tell me if I'm doing this right? I picked these cuties up from Home depot a couple months ago. The yellow one had this great flower bud looking like it might bloom soon but now it looks like I killed it. When I first got them they didn't have the little...bulbs? on the side of them or on top (like my red one.) I thought this was a sign I was doing well with them but now I'm worried I might be doing the same to the cacti that I did to the flower and I of course don't want that! So what I've been doing is checking the soil every week to feel if it feels like it's completely dry. Usually by the end of the week it feels that way. so I take them out of the decorative pots (cause they don't have drainage holes) and water them thoroughly with a slow but steady sink stream. Once the soil seems to have sufficient water, I allow the extra water to drain into the sink before putting them back into their decorative pots and putting them back on the windowsill for direct sunlight. I read that in winter you shouldn't water them as much (like once a month?) but we are still in fall her in NC. Am I doing this right or just being an idiot? I'm kinda bummed I lost the little flower but if I can encourage them to grow more I want to try! But mostly I want to be a good cacti parent....See MoreChristmas cactus color?
Comments (9)Do you have any photos to share? I have never heard of them changing colors & don't believe they do (like Hydrangeas or whatever). That WOULD be amazing, though, if they did! I'm wondering...and thinking a more likely answer...is that you have 2 plants in your pot. Maybe you purchased it with sections of 2 colors & one of them did not bloom till now. I bought a Schlumbergera that has white & red (?) blooms. This year the red started out blooming first & now the white has joined in. Is this possible for your plant?
