Rooting runners from a strawberry plant in hanging basket
Comments (6)I have my strawberries in hanging pots too and was trying to figure out a way to plant the runners. They're not quite long enough to stretch from one pot to another so I finally came up with a truly redneck solution. I filled some small Jiffy pots with soil and hung those from the big pot with some yarn. That way I could adjust the height exactly right. I used wire ties to pin the runner to the soil in the jiffy pot. Even outside in the wind and all, it was sturdy enough to hold everything together for about a week which was all the babies needed to take root. I then snipped everything and planted those jiffy pots in a big pot of their own. So far so good...I've got 5 daughter plants growing nicely now (I lost one)...one even had a bloom today but I pinched it off....See MoreStrawberries in a haning basket/ Runners???
Comments (1)Janice: You can root the runners from your hanging baskets, but you will somehow have to get some small pots up to the level of the runners and keep them there. Strawberry runners will root below the rosette of leaves that forms at the end of the runner, but in order to do so they must be in contact with moist soil. They will not root while hanging out in the air. Once the runners have rooted you can cut them off and carefully transplant the resulting plant to a bed. But if you cut off the runners without rooting them beforehand, they will die. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA...See MoreDo I remove the root ball from petunias for hanging baskets?
Comments (1)There shouldn't have been any need to double transplant. Your plants from the 6 packs should have gone directly into your hanging baskets. If you remove a good portion of the root ball, it will result in a pretty unhappy plant! Water and nutrients are taken up by the roots, and they support the plant. Remove a good portion, and the plant suffers (equate it to removing one of your lungs). You should easily be able to fit 3 4" pots into a standard 10" hanging basket without removing root mass....See MoreWhat mini's do good in hanging baskets?
