NWFL roses pruned and ready for spring
Comments (26)Evelyn is one of those that I hear great things about or that she is stingy. So that's very interesting to hear of your experiences since you are paying attention to the ph, thank you! I have some in pots and she is very vigorous so far, but no buds yet, unlike Sharifa Asma. But I'm afraid that SA will just turn white in full sun summer heat. My soil is sandy but not as white as yours. I had seriously considered Abraham Darby but heard that he liked to BS so decided to avoid last summer. But I must like a challenge because I just bought 40 more BS magnets like Angel Face! So he'll fit in fine if he does BS, LOL!...See MoreIs there a secret to Austin roses?
Comments (42)I used to be a David Austin rose fanatic always buying their new release roses but now I'm starting to loose interest in their newer varieties. Two new roses coming to Australia are: The Lady Gardener and another magenda red rose which I cant recall at the moment are not appealing enough. I think this is a great opportunity for me to try out roses breed by different rose breeders like Tantau, Gilluoits and maybe Kordes. I'm not sure what it was that got me hooked into DA roses and neglect other rose breeders. Their petals drop so quickly and a lot of the blooms gave weak neck and doesn't up straight. My parents say they are too messy and very short-lived. But I guess maybe I was aytracted to them because they remind me of life and how delicate and short life really us. Comments (156)Me too, Dave! Even though I promised myself I wouldn’t order any more roses, I’m ticked that Mary Magdalene is gone. I should have gotten her when I had the chance, but I want her ownroot. The pictures that Flowers recently posted on Daisy’s thread have me kicking myself. Oh well, it’s not like I’m running low on roses around here! My pot ghetto looks like a rose nursery. Lisa...See MoreDavid Austin roses vs kordes roses
Comments (52)I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison....See Morefilly_z8bFL
