apple tree hasn't had any blooms ... EVER!
Comments (10)Scott: I can't find any place on the tree where the limbs are attached where there may have been a graft ... what should I look for ... a 'ring' or something? Others: No, the tree is growing from the initial tree sent (not from the root or bottom).. hasn't died back at all. As for soil, nutrients, etc. the younger dwarf Fuji next to it has bloomed fine & setting a good apple crop this year. And yes, I pruned the ends of the branches back quite a bit late last summer of the '5-in-1'. I'm ashamed to admit I did order this from one of the nurseries people complain about, but not being available locally (a 5-in-1) & fairly cheap, I 'bit'! In the past I have occasionally gotten some decent things (bare root) from them but then again .. my 'fruit-less 5-in-1 and "Pole" apple trees! The tag I have on it says I got it from Burgess Nursery. Of course they say it no longer is under warranty & I need to fertilize, more water, etc, etc. The tree is very healthy ... but then- it has not been stressed by an apple crop either !!!ha A ?Haralson Pole apple from Guerney's in 1991 IS a pole apple but the ?McIntosh Pole apple from Guerney's is the one that is tall & very wide -NOT a pole apple for sure! We have paid a lot for trees from Sandy Bar & Van Wel Nurseries & got great trees & they both were wonderful companies to deal with (wanted some of the dwarf varieties of Cameo apple, Weeping Santa Rosa plum that were hard to find)so I guess again: you get what you pay for! Now to find the chain saw & cut some nice apple wood to dry for the fireplace next winter :(...See MoreWhy hasn't my Methley plum born fruit yet?
Comments (12)Scott has mastered the origin of plum varieties better than I, but Methely is considered a J. plum and Toka a hardier hybrid. Methely is hardier than any other red-fleshed J. plum that I've grown from my observations of cold related cambium damage. The more commonly grown J. plum in Z 5 NY is Shiro. Most Euro plums are somewhat hardier- also flower later. Peach buds have over a 5 degree differential of hardiness between flower and vegetative buds. One year my orchard got down to -22 and leaves were fine but not flowers. Same with areas not quite as cold as I believe -19 pretty much kills off flowers. Areas that got much below -25 lost their peach trees. As I recall the same thing held true for plums that year....See MoreStar Magnolia Hasn't Grown
Comments (3)last spring ... there was a very hot spell in march.. followed by severe cold in april and most of may.. i lost a vast majority of flowers on the spring shrubs .... they should be back this year ... i am in Adrian MI [just over the border form toledo ... ... nearly due north of you.. a bit west .. its been a very cold spring.. nothing has even started to bud out ... do NOTHING.. for a few weeks.. and lets see what happens ... i planted mine 10 years ago.. and have never done anything to mine.. i n the way of fert ... i doubt that is your solution ... it is not a big/fast mag .. i think .. mine is barely 5 feet tall ... after 10 years ... if its not dead.. it must have grown last year ... patience ... ken...See Morethe season hasn't even started yet! Comments (20)Heirloom Roses has good plants, but that doesn't mean all are disease resistant for your area. My The Impressionist got a touch of black spot, but didn't defoliate. I'm fortunate to be in an area that doesn't have black spot pressure and so far, I've have a no spray garden. Summer heat and thrips are my biggest problem and really had me down last year. If they appear again, I'm going to try alternating insecticidal soap and Spinosad at dawn or dusk when bees aren't active....See Moremelle_sacto is hot and dry in CA Zone 9/
