Brussels Sprouts for summer zone 9b (napa, ca)?
Comments (9)I can only speak to my climate which is definitely not hot and dry at any time of year. Sprouts are sown in spring, planted out in late spring early summer and then harvested in the cooler months, ie from October to April. Although eaten in the cooler months they have a long growing season and need planting in warmer months. (Warm by our standards would be around 60 - 70f.) The flavour is much improved after they have had a frost on them. This link give info. for the US. What is the friend who gave them to you doing with theirs?...See MoreMy Roses in Burning Heat...... I might move it to partial shade for better color. We are in hot & dry phase, up to 90 F, or 32 C." Straw: 90*F is not high heat for roses in my view. I mean in this temperature, my roses were performing very well. Could there be other (primary) reason for your Just Joey or any other rose not performing that well. I am not sure if 90*F alone is enough to cause deterioration in performance of a particular cultivar. I mean some mineral deficiency / excess or some issue with the soil that gets amplified due to rise in temp? Or could it be that my roses have slowly been acclimatized to perform better in heat? Just trying to understand what could be the reason for my Just Joey being quite yellow in 105*F and your's turning beige in 90*F. best regards PS: Sam, did you see the photos of Rose Biomes posted above? Jess: Alec's Red hasn't impressed me much. It is almost completely non fragrant since the temps rose above 100*F and is blooming sparsely. When I compare it's performance with many other roses, I would rate it quite low with regards to performance in summers though it performs much better when it is cooler. Sorry no experience of growing Christopher Columbus. I haven't actually seen it here....See MoreFlowering container plant zone 9b summer
Comments (3)Summer annuals like zinnia, golden cosmos, vinca. Epidendrum radicans. Jatropha (a small bush will have many red flowers until cold weather and will bring zebra longwings to sip nectar). Maybe visit a nursery to see which plants are kept in full sun now - and how they are faring. Lowes and Home Depot, for instance, have both sunny areas and shady areas. This time of year (rain-less) I keep most of my container plants, wherever they are, sitting in water or a saucer to catch the water if I add water to the top (and to keep them from rooting into the ground). I say this as a reminder that it is HOT out there and water evaporates FAST! If you haven't tried this with your poinsettias, maybe do. After all, they love to be in full sun - it's just that they should not dry out....See MoreWhere should I plant my Deelish Rose in zone 9b?
Comments (3)Mine do crisp, as KJ stated above, but not the worst crisper. My Poseidon is a crumpledcrumpledcrumpledcrumpled & faded taupe colored glob the first day it is open, needing dead heading, ASAP. it's my worstworst. I have intense, fulfull sun here in the 'Burgh...not typical of gardens around these parts. The microclimate phenomenon hits my garden hard. I have summer growing conditions much likelike one would have in the desert. Moses...See Moregyr_falcon
