In fact, I didn't even know that it was going to be done. HOA lied to me saying that Topchoice pesticide would be used so whatever... I just wished HOA would have gone with different one with better reputation at least. I KNOW Trugreen will spray during rain or extreme windy days because they have quota to fill before the day is over so quality is not the #1 on the list. I've seen someone spray something during high winds across the street from mine (facing west) but the park is south of me and i get strong south wind so 2,4-d could cause damage to my shantung maple from what I;ve read is sensitive to 2,4-d drift. HOA doesn't care that much about it apparently. I did tell the president that it would happen. Never heard back from him.

I live in TN in an agricultural county and herbicide damage is a very common occurrence. My neighbor's farm borders my land and it seems every spring on the hottest, windiest day he decides to spray his fields with the finest setting on his nozzles. He uses 2,4-D, as do most farmers, because it is CHEAP. After his crop is up, he uses Roundup on his Roundup-Ready crops. I've had damage to my stuff from 2,4-D, but never from Roundup. The trees always recover the following year, but look ugly the year they are damaged. The problem with 2,4-D is that it is EXTREMELY VOLATILE (think gasoline fumes) and it only takes the right conditions to produce damage. The last time I had damage I called my county agent and had him take a look at the strange curled leaves on my trees. I knew what it was but I played dumb. The agent looked at the damage and took some samples and never said a word. I asked him what he thought the problem was and he said he said it could be many things. I said I hoped it wasn't caused by my neighbor because if it was I would seek a restraining order. It hasn't happened again and my neighbor still waves when I see him LOL.

If the tree has carpenter ants, they're in the dead part of the tree. What does it mean when you say the tree has a "white vertical fungus?" Is the bark coming off. Or is a white something sticking out of the tree? As was suggested, an onsite visit by a Certified Arborist is wise. Some charge to just visit, some don't. So ask before s/he visits. And if the tree is determined to be hazardous and could topple onto your house, you need to find a way to remove it.

You move too fast. I'm hardly here at all on weekends and never even had a chance to respond before your saw came out! That is/was a canker of unknown origin. I'm looking at those dark stains and thinking metal. Could someone have pounded nails into the tree way up there? Screwed something in up there? In any case, my advice would have been to monitor the situation.
