Friend or Foe?

HI guys, i was on a late night inspection of my roses and came across this guy. Good news or Bad news ? I have been having some trouble with some austins, floribundas and polyanthas I've put in early this spring, something has been removing all the buds. Could this possibly be the culprit? Never seen anyting like this before. My wife and I just bought the hose in the fall and out in a new cottage garden, featuring a lot of roses. Right now we have very few buds opening. We live in Toronto zone 6 , very urban setting. We have a full sun garden with soil that has been amended with compost, manure and kelp meal, mushroom compost etc. Cant wait to hear from you guys

That is most likely a slime mold. It's harmless. Usually that happens with a lot of wet weather, and cloudy days. It will go away with dryer air and sun. You can get some leaf yellowing, but if your grass is healthy it will outgrow that.

Yes, L. inflata will try to blend in but the foliage is a bit coarser than L. siphilitica and the flowers tiny as you confirmed.

I can't get a good look from the photos, but it looks like a shield bug of some sort. Could it be this guy?

If so, they are probably eating your roses, not beneficial predators. Some shield bugs are beneficial, but I think the green ones are stink bugs and eat plants.

I recently heard a rule of thumb on the BBC Gardener's Question Time podcast that might be helpful in deciding whether to squish or admire. Apparently most predatory (ie beneficial) insects can move quickly whereas the vegetarian (ie. damaging) insects just creep along slowly. So if you encounter this fellow again, try giving him a scare and seeing how quickly he moves!

many thanks for helping me identify this guy. Not sure if it means anything, but the bed that the rose is planted in is underneath a silver birch

It says his (or her) food is primarily Yellow Birch, but I bet they like Silver Birch too.

Robert, because of the color, it was easy - I just used "advanced search" google, and wrote in "aqua beetle images", and a bunch of pics appeared, and which one he was was obvious because of the color & shape.
