Anyone ever grown Tithonia from seed?
Comments (9)belleville rose how long ago did you start them from seed? Are you in the south? I am in Canada so I haven't put mine in the ground yet. We got sleet and freezing rain last Wednesday so it has been not a good spring. They are starting to look a bit stressed at the moment as if they really would like to see some hot dry weather but it is still too early to put them out, I think. Our nights are still down to the low 40's F or 5-8 degrees Celcius. I put them outside today when it was up to 70 degrees F. and sunny. They still look sad though. Do you have any ideas?...See MoreBaking type poppy seeds, anyone ever plant em?
Comments (16)Edible poppy seeds ARE from the opium poppy, papaver somniferum. They have also been grown for the flowers for centuries and I am sure they are handed down as viable seeds in many places. I have also heard that they have naturalized in some parts of the Pacific Northwest. That said: It is also true that the poppy seeds sold to the baking and grocery industries have been treated by heat or irradiated to prevent them from sprouting. Additionally, if you are required to take drug test for your job, you will want to be careful eating poppy seed cakes, bagels, etc. They can cause you to test positive for opiates!...See MoreAnyone else commit a major layout crime? Comments (12)Rookie, the so-called rules can make good guidelines to consider in many situations. When following them can cause problems and/or the wrong sacrifices, though, they're worse than worthless and really need to be ditched--just like your worry about some horrible nonproblem in what sounds like a very nice kitchen. My aisle between work island and stove counter is also 34 inches, very much on purpose since I wanted an efficient main workspace. It works very well, and I'm pretty sure no one's ever noticed (the counters are also 35 inches high). My defining issue was keeping it as narrow as possible while still being able to step around a hot open undercounter oven door to baste, etc. The standard "rules" were totally wrong for me and my space, so I set up a sawhorse-and-4x8-plywood island, mounted the oven on some scraps of 2x4s, opened the door, walked back and forth, decided on the space I wanted, and drew a line where the island would go. I measured out of curiosity afterward. Regarding resale, if you're ever visiting upscale open houses, take a tape measure and prepare to be amused, and bemused, at how many so-called "rules" many very appealing and costly kitchens break, especially the one in your and my kitchen. You'll also likely be the only one who notices. :)...See MoreAnyone ever grown a pomegranate from seed and seen it fruit...?
Comments (18)Well, let's put it this way: my hardiness zone is the equivalent, I think, to you USA zone of New England. our temperatures can fluctuate form -10 degrees C in the winter time though it has been known to get a little colder) to a realistic max of 83 degrees C (though conversely, it has been known to get hotter!) However, those hot temperatures are currently very few and far between... this summer in the UK - we don't have a summer, and none is predicted for the foreseeable future. As it stands, today's high is 16 C (equivalent to 62 degrees F.) Which for our summer is just miserable. So, summing up, these ain't gonna fruit any time not soon not no way. Especially outdoors! That said, their rate of growth is amazing. The photo (above) I posted this morning, I took just before posting it. The main growers (biggest ones) have already grown more, and the 1st true leaves are now showing quite proud, and taking on a russet colour......See Moresaplumeria
