Ferrets: where to find wild, indigenous? (for chipmunk control)
Comments (16)Thanks so much for your great replies and ideas! ÂDenn, rat traps, in my experience, are difficult to handle, but I'm glad you have good experience with them. Watch your finger, though! We tried them, but caught nothing. Also they had to be snapped before dusk, so an unlucky coon wouldn't get a foot snapped. (We have lately been very sucessful w/live traps, though) ÂSandy, a feline would be very nice, but how do you solve the toilet problem? Does she use a litter box in the shed? Or does she go in the woods? What I didn't know, but learned this afternoon, is that weasels (not ferrets!) are indiginous to my area. That's great news! for it would be ideal if the chipmunk population could be controlled by natural means by getting indigenous weasels established. The area has acres and acres of uncultivated land, stone fences, woods, & wetlands, plus lots of food (chipmunks, woodchucks, racoons). If weasels don't settle here on their own, I hope to find a source, or locate an organization that would settle some weasels in the woods around here. Comments (50)By far, the best succes I've had is with a have-a-heart type trap. I place the trap along an open run against a wall (ex. up against your house). I don't use any bait at all. The chipmunks just walk right through the trap and get caught. I've caught 35 chipmunks in 30 days and then no more (i had caught most or all of them in the area). i can catch 4 per day at times if i really keep checking the trap. this works for me every time ive tried it. if you dont catch one for a few days, move the trap to a different wall. i just kill the boogers, but do what you like with them. you may have to do this every few years to keep the population down....See MoreEffective chipmunk/ground squirrel control
Comments (184)A big THANK YOU for the "bucket of death" idea!!!! I have lost a season's worth of strawberries (wouldn't have hurt so much if they hadn't taken just a couple of bites and gone on to the next berry and even ate the green ones); I probably don't need to include the holes there. I thought our drought conditions were hurting a lovely Korean Spice Bush; odd, the other plants are doing well. Since every place else in the bed is open ground, under the bush things are hidden, so I looked and yup, there was a hole. Have been seeing a chipper for a while but never connected it to tree damage. And have been weeding and finding only the outer skins of crocus and hardly any larger ones. And my little fritilaries are down to three. That HURTS! The last straw was hearing noises from the air vents. I live in a mobile home with the skirting insulated. The little buggers are getting in somewhere. When my cats sit at the vents for an hour they are either listening for mice and apparently chipmunks. It wouldn't take them much to get inside here from underneath. I tried snap traps but kept catching birds hungry because of the drought. SO: went out and bought me a bucket and some seed and made me a "bucket of death". And guess what? Caught one first night! I noticed that there were a few spaces in the floating seeds; that's a good indication of a dead chipper. I also checked along the back of my home where the ground meets the concrete slab and behold, a hole under the stairs (in the general direction of said noises). Took a waste basket and did the "bucket" thing again. I used a 2x6" board for the one out front; stuck a few seeds onto the end with PB but those weren't touched. Out back I just put a few seeds on a step. Haven't checked that one yet though. Weather will soon be turning cold and I don't want to share my home with these destructive critters, not to mention their fleas and ticks and diseases....See MoreHelp me think of cute halloween costume ideas...
Comments (26)I am dressing my DS)9) as a UPS man this year. I bought brown cargo shorts and a brown button down shirt at Childrens Place. Got a brown UPS cap on clearance at K Mart months ago for $1.20 (thats what inspired me). I already have the perfect size Amazon box for him to flip open for candy as he says "trick or treat". His eyeglasses turn dark in the light so they will look like sunglasses I think. All I need is to get short brown socks and to figure out an easy way to make a UPS logo for the shirt. hmmm....as for Grant, it reminds me of when my daughter was 2. She cried and carried on not wanting to wear the hat to her lion costume. In our pictures inside, she is not wearing the hat, but once she got outside in the stroller to trick or treat I was able to put the hat on while she stared at costumed kids. She didn't even seem to care anymore. The following year she was a clown and I painted her blond hair with pink hair mascara. It came out nice-no hat needed. You could probably get Grant some caped kid pjs at Target. They used to carry Superman and Batman, I think they still do. I had to buy them in 2 sizes because my son and daughter both liked to wear them. Does Grant like any particular characters?? He'd be a cute Bob The Builder! Someone mentioned a mailman-when my other daughter was in 1st grade they had Career Day. She dressed as a 'mailgirl' and delivered her homework in a priority mail envelope LOL!! I like the scarecrow idea! Thats not something you normally see....See Moreminiscule
