A "for a friend" climbing rose...help, please!
Comments (6)Unless she really, really wants a very double flower, I'd recommend Captain Samuel Holland. It doesn't have the thorns that Quadra does, won't get more than 15 ft tall, won't get out of hand, given water will have almost continuous bloom, and can handle most anything the climate can throw at it. From your list, the only negatives are that it does not set hips, so doesn't need deadheading, and it isn't particularly interesting during the winter. I believe it is from the same hip as Quadra. There is another rose from the same cross, Felix LeClerc, that hasn't been out very long that should be worth looking at. Captain Samuel Holland was a Tory surveyor who went to the Maritimes during the American Revolution....See MorePlease help me choose some climbing roses
Comments (11)I know all about the first come, first served policy! To my cost! Some trees were taken out before I moved in, so shade is not really a factor. The lot lies on an East/West axis, with a fence and cedar hedge along the long north edge. The house sits at the east end of the lot, so the back yard is actually something of a u-shaped suntrap, with the empty part of the u facing south. The most difficult part of the yard for roses is along the west, which is where the trees used to be. I have the albas there. Some roses are wrapped in burlap, two are tipped and covered with dirt and compost, and all but the albas, rugosas, and a hybrid setigira are mounded with dirt and straw. This last winter has been quite mild, with only one night of lows near 0, and the ground not staying frozen--I am glad I mounded, even if I do get some canker....See MorePlease help me choose a climbing rose
Comments (12)'Laguna' is vigorous and I do not think it would fit into a space that size. Mine is 15' wide and 10' tall. Also nasty wicked thorns. (Otherwise it is nice.) Generally low and wide works better as a support structure than tall and narrow. Low and wide enables you to fan the canes out at a somewhat horizontal angle, which encourages more flowers. It also makes them much easier to trim and deadhead when you can reach most or all of the rose. If you have never grown a climbing rose before try to select one that doesn't have too many thorns. They are a lot easier to work with. Look at 'Jasmina' instead of 'Laguna'. Maybe 'Berries n Cream'. But on that structure if it was mine I would put a Clematis, not a rose....See MorePlease help me decide on a yellow climbing rose.
Comments (12)thanks all, I didn't even think of cl. "Lady Hillingdon" and I do want the bush form of Lady Hillingdon, but for the house would prefer a more lemony hue to go against the pale gray house. I just added "Lamarque" to my order from rogue valley, yesterday, I'm getting two "Westside Road Cream Tea" rosebushes to flank the front of the pathway to my front door, they will be side by side with "Mlle. Cecille Brunner"( the smaller c. 4' tall form) with an arbor in back of these with yellow climbing roses "Marachel NIel" and "Cecline Foreestier" and French lavender on the other side of the arbor so the view from my front door will be of lavender, yellow climbers, and "Mme. Berkeley" and "Clementina Carboinieri" off to one side, where I'm planting a mandarin orange tree for evergreen winter interest. The yellow climber I'm searching for will be on this side of the house. Originally I planned for cl. "Cramoisi Superieur" but decided I love yellow roses more than red roses. I still can't decide although I'm leaning towards "Alistair Stella Gray"which I've grown before, or "Leys Perpetual" although I swore I'd never again buy a rose that I have never seen in "person". so many beautiful roses, and finite rose real estate. Lux....See MoreMila Ski (Z5 Chicago)
