Thanks Jon, I'd like to get 60-70% planted eventually but I do enjoy the pots and I seem to have cracked the ideal potting mix, I hope. I have repotted about 60 odd hostas so far since spring and they have come on well since. I don't think I was feeding/fertilising enough previously and had poor growth.

Well, you don't seem to have that problem anymore, Denis. There are so many pretty ones it's hard to pick out my fave but Frosted Jade gets the call. Your Lakeside Cha Cha looks much more vigorous than mine.

Glad the midges didn't carry you away, otherwise we would have missed this great post! They all look so great but that flowering GE is something else!! Enjoy the blooms and the rain. Denis, I agree with Dave... I'd love to have a rocky area where I could plant in the ground... enjoy making the most of your space! 60/40 ratio would be close to my ideal too!

Glad that your plants are progressing well - working with pots presents more challenges, but there are definite advantages too.

They are all looking wonderful but that Great Expectations is fabulous. Isn't that one that people complain about? Grows great for some and not well at all for others? Or is it just a slow grower?

Sue, judging by your zone, I am inclined to think you should be able to grow GE easily. It likes sun. It hates to be moved. Plant it on the shallow side as the soil around it will settle and anchor the plant a bit deeper. It loves being watered but not so much that it is constantly wet. When you feel the leaves they should be firm/turgid to the touch. If they don't, it is time to water. Works for me, zone 5.

It seems I like to push the envelope when growing my hostas - in more sun than is recommended. One of the reasons is that shade is at a premium and the other is to promote more vigour, even in the slow ones. The trick is to not allow them to burn, lol. GE responds superbly to morning sun and favourably to a bit longer here.

Denis, I certainly enjoy watching your ever expanding collection of lovely hosta. Keep them coming!!

Saija, About that hosta from Eurohosta, well two of that order are certain HVX, Blue Umbrellas and Potomac Pride, I am very disappointed about this. Their statements about hvx on their website seem to be pretty meaningless. I won't be ordering from them anymore.I have not contacted them yet as I'm too mad as yet. The rest of that order are still in pots and will remain until I am certain they are healthy, Frosted Jade and Yellow River above are part of that order. I do hope yours are ok, I was singing their praises until this, sorry about that.

Sue Brunette, I bought that Great Expectations about a month ago so I cannot claim to have grown it so well, we will see this time next year what it looks like, fingers crossed.I have it in full sun so far this year. I do have another GE but its not good and I won't be showing it lol.

Especially for Queen Jo, Brother Stefan, no leaps in growth yet, still two eyes but both are sending up scapes and we know what that means for next year don't we? Repoted this year and not looking too bad considering I found the cat curled up in the pot when it was piping aaagh!

I just looked at this thread again! If you show Hollywood Lights again this season, I'm going to have to get one! :-)

Hey jo......Hollywood lights when it was just up, a late riser avoiding the late frosts, have it in full sun and no blemishes so far, me likey!

Your hostas are looking great! Your GE is beautiful; nice coloring on your Paul's Glory; Hollywood Lights is looking good. Your Frances Williams resembles my Olive Bailey Langdon. I really like that Sum and Substance sport! Nice grouping in your "a work in progress" area.

MM and Jo, maybe I will have to just try my luck with Great Expectations after all. Previously I just planted the hostas and let them do their thing. Now that I am getting back into it again, I am going to start moving some around that don't seem to be thriving where they are, and see if they prefer a new spot better. I also have lots of volunteers that have shown up, mainly from my Elegans I think but I have one that is rather yellow that definitely planted itself so I am curious to see how that progresses. Hostas-they are an adventure!

You'll never know till you try with GE, Sue! :D. Rooting for you if you do! After seeing Denis's GE, it sure makes me want to get more!

The volunteers are cute little things and I found some for the first time last year. All are various shades of green with some variation in the shape of leaves and one with a very faint mark I discovered today. I'll have to take some pics and see if it shows. Your yellowish one sounds interesting! Could be something special! Enjoy moving your hostas around and take some pics too - would love to see them.

Mountainy Man: Thanks for information. It's good to know, so now I can be extra careful. I made quite big order from EH, so I'm sure there is infected ones. Just can't yet see which ones. I won't order from them anymore, that's sure. If you contact EH about HVX, would you tell me what they responded.
