dimension? (pre-emergent questions?)
Comments (20)Here is what I found online. Crabgrass will die later in the fall. To prevent it next year (you will have plenty of crabgrass seeds waiting to germinate in the spring), use a pre-emergent when the forsythia blooms (and a second treatment about six weeks later or when the instructions tell you) I live on L.I. and was not able to find Dimension by Lesco. I found the following crabgrass pre-emergent has the same active ingredient as Dimension. Pre emergent Spectracide® Weed Stop® for Lawns plus Crabgrass Preventer Granules The chemical is: Dithiopyr (CAS 97886-45-8)............ 0.16% .22% 1 – 6 mos. Application .10% 2 – 3 mos. Applications Preemergent herbicides must be applied at a critical time. If they are applied to the soil too early, they get washed too deep into the soil or washed away by rainwater. If they are applied too late, the key enzyme inhibited is no longer active. The best control requires a second application about 6-8 weeks later. This provides coverage in mid-late summer when crabgrass can still germinate. Depending on location, one rule of thumb is to apply when the local forsythia blooms are wilting. In the northeast, apply before azaleas bloom. Hope this helps....See Morepre emergent question
Comments (1)Jeff1298, I may very well be corrected due to me learning this as well, but from what I understand is that you want as low amount of N as you can get. I guess if that's as low as you can get then you don't have a choice, but I've seen references for home depot having Lesco 0-0-7 and that it's a good pre-em....See MorePre-emergent for lawn broadleaf weeds
Comments (10)For the 1 tbsp, as much as is convenient to get it down. I'm presuming Prodiamine granular? I use about ten gallons because I use a hose-end. One gallon would be more convenient in a backpack sprayer. I might lightly irrigate that in--ten, 15 minutes just to wash it off the leaves--but it's not necessary if you don't want to. If you're going to overseed in August, go very light on the Prodiamine if you use it at all! It'll suppress out grass seed just like crabgrass, and CG likes sprouting in August as well. Good CG suppression through summer is going to mean very poor grass sprout in August. Page 2 of the manual shows the bar chart for pounds per acre (roughly tbsp per thousand) for months of protection. 2 months (May to August) is off the bottom but...well, if we finagle a bit and estimate (which we really shouldn't do because we have no assurance that this remains linear off the listed scale), we'd come up with an estimate of about 0.33 lb/A or 0.33 tbsp/thousand application rate to achieve 2 months of protection. (The linear equation is actually 5.2T + 0.2 for those who are curious, with T being tablespoons used by my estimate, but I'm just eyeballing it so you may come up with different answers). Even so, some suppression of sprout is to be expected. Post that, the grass should be on its third or fourth mow before applying Prodiamine again; it can kill young grasses. By late September, it's marginal, but you should be OK...still, it may slip into October....See MoreBermuda - Fall Treatment (0 - 0 - 60)
Comments (15)Hi morpheusa, Need your input here and wanted to bring back this thread since we are in Spring now in NC. The plan is to apply lime to the backyard in mid-April and then wait a week and apply some Organic fertilizer. Thoughts on this plan for the spring? I eye-balled the pre-em and applied first on Jan 18 and got some weeds now in the lawn so applied my pre-emergent (Lesco 0-0-7) first week of March. It appears that for my lawn the bag-rule of applying every 90 days doesn't seem to work, atleast the crab-grass is not there but other weeds have come up. Is it ok to apply every 60 days? My plan now is to next apply the 0-0-7 in mid-June. Thoughts on the lime and pre-emergent? My goal this year is get the grass growing on the slope and my yard in general. Weeds I think I can live with it, as long has the 0-0-7 is preventing the crab-grass. Plan for the rest of the Spring / Summer - April - (Scalp on the 18th) Put down fast acting lime + Front,Back - Organic fertilizer (10-0-2) I might borrow a dethatcher instead of scalping and do it in April. (Not yet decided) May 1 - Backyard - Put down Alfalfa pellets (Rabbit food) May 20 - Front - Put down Lesco 39-0-0 or 32-5-7 (Which ever high N fert is available) Back - Put down 10-0-2 June 15 - Put down pre-em 20 - Front 39-0-0, Back - Put down Alfalfa pellets + (39-0-0 maybe half rate) July 20 - Front 39-0-0, Back - 39-0-0 Aug 20 - Front - 39-0-0 Back - 10-0-2 or 39-0-0 Thank you!...See More- 7 years ago
