Finally found the 'grit' ingredient for my gritty mix.
Comments (13)Virtually all clays are made of aluminum phyllosilicates - the aluminum is locked into insoluble layered crystals. In fact, turface is calcined montmorillonite / illite, both of which are aluminum phyllosilicate clay minerals. It's only soluble aluminum ions that cause phytotoxicity, the form in clay is essentially inert. Attapulgite as a turface substitute is discussed by Al in the link below. Its not clear if the product you bought is calcined - perhaps you could call and ask. Or just do the water test - soak it in water for a couple days and see if it stays hard, intact, and stable. If you have freezing temperatures, you may want to try freezing/thawing as well. Calcining converts the clay to a hard, stable, inert ceramic - making it useful as a growing media. The upshot of the linked thread is that surface area, porosity, and nitrate retention of attapulgite are inferior....See MoreLong Term Potting Mix Recipe - Alternative to Gritty Mix
Comments (27)I thought I posted this on the gardenweb forum. Now it's houzz? Had to sign up for a new user name. Anyway soo - you can get the Naked Gardener Compost or Debco Premium Potting Mix from Masters (closing soon). Course Perlite is from The Perlite & Vermiculite Factory Myaree (much cheaper than anywhere else). Sand I got from a bulk landscape place (lawn mix) but you can get 10 or 20kg bags of builders sand at Bunnings. Zeochlor is in the pool section at Bunnings. Rock Dust I got from the manufacturer direct somewhere in Bibralake (called Natural PK) but I think but you can now get a similar product from Waldecks (in Myaree at least). Waldecks also sell bentonite clay. I still want to try the gritty mix but getting my hands on all the materials has proved very difficult when I tried last year. I found a Queensland company that makes course DE (for mopping up oil/chemicals) but they didn't have a distributor in Perth. Nobody I could find has pine bark in the right size - and even if they did I'd have to by a cement mixer and modify it with a fine wire to screen it. Honestly, if an agricultural company were to produce the gritty mix and sell it in bags I think they'd make bank - even considering how long it lasts....See MoreWhat is the grit in gritty mix made from.
Comments (17)I bought a bag of decomposed granite to try to use for my grit mix and I ended up giving most of it away. First of all it is very dirty/muddy, but mainly the particle sizes ranged 1-2mm to > 1inch pebbles, so I was having to wash, sift, and sort!! I ended up buying pumice off amazon and have been using that with vermiculite and shredded pine bark....See MoreHELP! New to succulents, soil has insufficient drainage, gritty mix?
Comments (15)Yes, I do. I have a nice big porch, which will be perfect next spring. I believe I am in zone 6A, it's starting to get quite chilly here in the evenings, and it is hurricane season, so we've had a couple very windy days, since they aren't used to being outside, I think I'd keep them in for this year. I don't want to do more damage at this point! Your succulents are gorgeous! Do you use grow lights through the winter? I've been debating whether my south facing window is enough. When it's sunny, it gets plenty of sun, but the winters here are often grey and over cast. Someone on the succulent Facebook group I'm on recommended sunblaster grow lights, so I've been thinking about possibly giving those a go! I've had at least had some luck propogating! I bought some leaves off Etsy, was given some from friends, and picked some up off the floor while I was buying my succulents at the hardware store. Nearly all are now rooting, and I've got some cute little babies starting! And thank you socks! I'm trying to get this right!!...See MoreNil13 usda:10a sunset:21 LA,CA (Mount Wash.)
