gritty mix: what is gran-i-grit in a mason's language?
Comments (4)I ran into the same problem with the manna pro. Turns out it is not packaged in a larger size. :( I did find a usable grit at a sand blasting supply/grit gravel yard. But will have trouble getting it picked up. So today I am going to call around and try masonry stores. I've also read in past threads that some have found it at roofing supplies. Hope that helps. Comments (10)Re: "Is there a thread that will tell me exactly how much to mix of each and how to screen etc?" I'm sure there are many others that are just as good, but I happened to have this one bookmarked: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/contain/msg031028425011.html It's a 1:1:1 mix, or equal parts by volume, of the granite, Turface, and bark. As for screening, that's covered more in the thread, but I believe you're aiming for a particle size of between 1/4, and ideally 1/8 inch, but 1/16 is acceptable. I was never able to find a 1/8 screen, and screened everything over an aluminum insect screen (1/16) without any real ill effects besides needing to add a wick in my largest pots. Here's what my last batch ended up looking like: That said the ratio not an exact formula that you have to follow. Example: I'm trying a mix of 1 part bark, 1 part granite, 2 parts Turface for more water retention in my potted hydrangeas. Once you get the hang of the mix you can try to adjust it to suit your needs, but honestly out of almost 30 different kinds of plants and trees I grow in containers - the hydrangeas were the only ones I felt compelled to mess with the ratio, everything else seems to love the mix. Though one of my orchids is being finicky in it... Here is a link that might be useful: Al's Gritty Mix -- A Learning Experinece...See MoreIs this the right grit for gritty mix?
Comments (4)You can find a smaller size of grit (for growing chickens, not adult chickens), but it looks pretty good to me. I'm using white granite grit, which looks the same but without the black/grey specks (nearly pure white)....See MorePotting soil, gritty mix, perlite, chicken grit, etc.
Comments (9)socks Using garden soil or compost in containers isn't that good. In ground - garden beds yes, but containers need good drainage so do not clog up one or few small drainage holes. Succulents, in their natural habitat, grow mostly in very lean and gravely soils, that doesn't have any compost. My plants grow in mix of grit+perlite+turface and I didn't even fertilize for past 3-4 years (since I have almost all of them). Not saying they shouldn't get some ferts, but don't over-love them. Many ppl do. See posts by Kevin - ewwmayo; he has quite controlled growing conditions as light, temps and ferts go and his plants are show-worthy. He grows in a mix just about same as mine. Sometimes less is more :)...See MoreHelen Agius (Adelaide,Sth Aus) USDA Z10b
