Comments (3)Hi! I've noticed this, too, when I bring my banana tree in for the winter. The older leaves all start to brown and drop off, while the new ones grow a lot more slowly. For me, this process usually slows a great deal as the browning reaches the top layers of the plant. I think it's just the plant realizing it doesn't have the required energy to support so much foliage...at any rate, it's nothing to worry about. Just be really careful about over-watering it. I usually go so far as to let my banana begin to wilt before giving it another drink. Go light on the fertilizer, and if necessary, consider bringing in a touch of artificial lighting. Good luck!...See MoreBe careful when changing to a fast draining soil mix
Comments (23)Thanks, everyone, for the great advice. Since I could not find a Turface retailer nearby, and since I did not want to wait (call me impatient), I went to the local NAPA store and bought 25 lbs. of Floor Dry #8822. Cost less than 10 bucks, which is cheaper than dirt. Literally, if you compare to bagged potting soil. Tried out the new mix on a few plants. It's around 50% Floor Dry, 20% gravel, 20% perlite, 10% potting soil. I removed the chicken grit, because mine is for chicks and is the smaller size. Didn't think it helped (but it is nice for rooting cuttings). Here's a pic of my Sarcocaulon herrei in the new mix. I actually liked the look of the mix so much (more natural, if I can say that about a potted plant) that I did not top dress with gravel. I know there are still more fines in there than some would recommend, but I think that, overall, it is a big step up from what I was using. Drains like a Shih Tzu through a goose. Unless I run into issues, I'll probably wait to repot everyone else until they go outside in late spring. Or, if I get snowed in for a weekend and feel the need to get my hands into some dirt. Thanks, again, for all the help. Bill...See MoreAre any of your citrus leaves starting to turn yellow?
Comments (48)It's best to spray when the light isn't very strong or the sunlight can be amplified by the oils and and damage the leaves. Best time to spray would be early morning or an hour before sunset. Usually the sprays instruct you to use them over a certain period of time because the lifecycle for pests is very short and they reproduce quickly. It's probably best to use the spray or wash with water even if there are beneficials bc of what Mike said about overwintering. The pests do well overwintering on the trees and live through until spring so reducing them as much as possible will help. You won't have beneficials in your house to help....See MoreSpider Plant baby rescues - Fast Growth, Limp Leaves?
Comments (18)I see what your motivation was now. I just noticed that you always recommended the c/s and perlite mix, and was curious. I know lots of people have trouble finding the ingredients. I was just lucky to have found what i was looking for with a few phone calls, visiting a couple places and being directed to a source for the last ingredient. The hassle is a very real concern, but the cost for me was not a factor. The pine ultra fines cost a little over $2 for a monster 3cft bag, the turface was about $17 for a 2 cft bag, and peat at $10 for 2 cft, thats manageable because the pine bark is the cheapest and largest component. Its a lot of soil for cheap once you find the pine bark. One just has to look for them, and all the other components are easy. Once everything is sourced, i wouldnt be surprised if it came out cheaper for the 511 per pot. On-brand is just a synonym for true to expectations, i wasn't referring to a brand name. Lol...See Morehobbyartisan (Saskatoon, SK Canada, 2b)
