Igot mine at a super sale price at Sam's recently for around $30. I don't know if they are still that price. The original version was only available for iPhone the newest updated version is for both Android and iPhone. The battery also last double the original. So most video reviews may be for the original.

Ihave other trackers. I have a Smart Health that's very basic, it's a watch too and has a metal contact place you can hold your finger on and it gives you your heart rate. I use it mainly as a watch and for the heart rate monitor. It's pretty close compared to the one at my doctors office.

Thanks, raven. I'd like to get FIL something he can look at on his wrist and get immediate feedback about how many steps he's walked, and how far.

He's a luddite! MIL bought him a track phone that he can use if he really needs it, and he still fumbles with it. He's verrrrry tech illiterate.

MIL could share feedback and summaries with him if the info was sent to her account. But overall, I'd like something that shows him how much he's done on any given day, in the moment.

That's going to be more difficult then. Try looking at the Smart Health. It's very basic but that's all you will find in a tracker that doesn't use an app.

I have a Fitbit Flex, it's basic but does the job of measuring steps per day (with a goal of 10,000). It comes with a Bluetooth USB dongle for a PC and after a brief and easy onetime install, the daily data download and progress tracking is automatic. I suspect other brands are too.

I have a good friend with a Garmin, she likes it a lot. Many of the more expensive models (Fitbit and Garmin for sure, maybe others) have displays and so do double duty as digital watches.

Fitbit Charge and Charge HR will track all the stuff the Flex does but with a more intuitive display. The band in the Flex and Charge has an odd connector, which a lot of folks complain about. I had the Charge and didn't have problems with the connector. The Charge (without HR) is a little cheaper and has the odd snap connector like the Flex. The Charge HR has a watch band type connector and is more secure and is worth the extra $20. The Charge and Charge HR are probably best for your FIL. Having said all that, there have been some quality issues with the bands. Peeling, separating, etc are reported within 24 months of ownership.

I have the FitBit Surge and really like it but it's more than what he needs. It has independent GPS tracking (which means I don't have to bring my phone with me) and is useful for running, walking, biking and other activity tracking. I used to have the Charge but the band broke so I returned it and replaced with the Surge. I've had the Surge since Feb and FitBit has already replaced it once due to band peeling.

There are many different devices out there. I like my FitBit but there are things I don't like about it.....which is probably going to happen with any product you choose.

It's true, the band fastener is a bit odd and takes some getting used to. Once you figure out how it works, it's fine.

The product ships with a medium and a small band, both too small for me. I called them and Fitbit sent me a large one for free. Oddly, they don't mention that the larger size is available upon request.

Ah.....yes, the aptly named Flex. Unfortunately, the Charge and Charge HR do not have interchangeable bands......they are fixed.....and set sizes of small and large.

Daughter gave me a Fitbit for my b-day. Initially it was hard to attach but now a piece of cake. I wear it all the time and have almost hit 15,000 steps. I must be boring because I take around 13,000- 14,500 steps a day and always the exact same miles...almost 6.. like 5.89 or close to it. I wish I had had one when my daughter and I have gone to Manhattan where I know we walked about 15 miles from 11-8 with out a break except for lunch.
