Want to Participate in a 2013 GWF Garden Tour; a "Year in Review"
Comments (12)How about the evolution of one area 2010-2013? It's taken time to try to get the effect I wanted, especially because I didn't know what effect I wanted in the first place. 2010: Got rid of that lawn and the Cercis trees in 2012. 'Laguna' climber has grown to obscure a good bit of the neighbor's roof. Yay! Added a tutuer as a focal point for the axial view, but the dull green color doesn't attract the eye. Moved all the 'Jubilee Celebration's there to form a hedge. Temporary row of bell peppers in front of the roses proved quite ornamental. Dahlias and shasta daisies and 'Rozanne' this June almost stole the show from the roses... November 2013...the dahlias and daisies are done for the year, but 'Rozanne' and the roses go on and on. The eye is supposed to be drawn from the 'Rozanne's back and forth along the path up to the 'Perle d'Azur' clematis on the right side fence and then to the tuteur, which doesn't look like it in the photo but painted now the same color (in person) as the 'Rozanne' flowers. That's the theory, anyway. Now if the exact right shrubs can be found to render the rest of the neighbor's roof invisible, I will finally be satisfied. (Temporarily.) As a garden evolves, so does the gardener--or is it the other way around? And to recall 1999 again, the same area but looking in the other direction....See MoreSelf-guided tours to public rose gardens
Comments (10)A downloadable, self-guiding tour sounds like an idea I may need to steal. We have been printing self-guided tours for a couple of years now, but the printing costs are scary. Even without being particularly consciensious about keeping the guides out, a summer can cost us $500. While I'm not sure that the casual visitor would be expected to find an on line guide, we are getting a larger number of people coming specifically to see the garden. But I do have memories of certain of your abundant blooms and their combinations that have really penetrated my old brain fog. I remember Peggy Martin on the fence, Iceberg on the arches, and Climbing Pinkie on the umbrella trellis. So, in those cases, the structures are an important part of both displaying the roses and preserving my memories. But in other cases, it was the combination of roses that was outstanding, like Falstaff and Iceberg, or the wall of "desserts". And how the special roses worked together was what made them so memorable. Sometimes the outstanding singular nature of a rose came through strongly to me like the huge size of the Yves Piaget blooms. or the blazing color of Chrysler Imperial, not to mention the age of the grafted CIs. Such an enduring rose that one is. So putting all these together, plus the roses' wonderful companions, has made many special lasting rose memories for me. Thanks for the memories, Cori Ann.
