Finally ready for winter...last chore done last night.
Comments (3)Hmmmm.....I hadn't considered what to do by the time they are too big to tie, mad gallica. The problem is, not a whole lot of shrubs will fit those particular screening needs in small spaces. Have they stopped being recommended, I wonder? Brandon...we get lots of heavy snow most winters. This is my first winter with the Sky Pencil. I think I will be happier in the spring having it tied so it won't splay out. It was so easy too. Not having to tie it is one of the advantages of your zone and less snow, enjoy it. :-)...See MoreGot my heat mat up and running last night!
Comments (5)I use my instant read meat thermometer to check soil temperatures, so it does double duty for the seedlings and for the kitchen. I also use my waterproof (body) heating pads, set on low, with a wire rack on top to raise the seedling tray off of them a half-inch or so, and they keep the air in the domed trays (also free, clear plastic rectangular salad greens containers) a constant 80F. So far the only cost of raising seedlings has been for my soil-less mix and the seeds, but right now I'm using a small single bulb shop light. In just a few days I'll be home, so I'll be purchasing some 4-foot double ones. I have discovered the perfect seedling chamber....an old picnic cooler! With the 2' light suspended from the handles by straps, foil taped to the inside of the lid to reflect light (along with the white interior of the chest) and the lid open just far enough to bring the power cord out, my tomatoes and peppers are really happy campers! This is how the plants will make their 1200 mile journey next week.... Granny Here is a link that might be useful: Annie's Kitchen Garden...See MoreWhat I learned last night about cleaning old brass
Comments (8)The decoration suggests there were for candles in a church. The 'lacqured' sticker indicates that originally, the finish was protected by a coat of laquer. If the lacquer coat is gone, after cleaning, brass and bronze can be kept nice looking by applying automotive wax. Do not use a cleaner wax; it contains abrasives. The wax will polish up nicely, and it can be removed with warm water and detergent and re-waxed....See MoreStayed up till 3:00 am last night....
