What is your favorite way to spread the fever?
Comments (42)Hope no one minds if I give part two of my prior post from May 16. The one where I bought Optimara Modesty. Remember she was one of 3 violets in the Lowe's that day. Well I went back to Lowe's today and those same two violets were still there. Last time I saw them was on May 16 when I bought Modesty. Oh you should have seen them. I think they may be circleing the drain. There leaves are so limp they just hang over the pot. I felt so bad for them I took them over to a decorative fountain and let the water run over the soil on both of them. At least that would help until I was done with grocery shopping. Yes,,,,,,I asked the lady to reduce them and bought them both. Poor things. But guess what I noticed when I got to the car? The white one was tagged Ontario! Could it be Optimara Ontario???? Becha it is! The other one had deep purple blooms with little white flecks on it. They are both in the intensive care unit right now. Well if they don't make it I will take them back for a refund. Thank goodness Lowe's does that. I know it was stupid and they may die anyway but,,,,well, I guess I have no more to say about it. Rosie...See Morewhat is your favorite way to tag your trees?

Comments (11)I only freeze these veggies, sugarsnap peas, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, greenbeans, corn, both on cob and cut off. I both dry and freze okra, the latter for stew. I also freeze fruit: strawberries, blueberries, peaches, apples and elderberries. i also make fresh juice--beet-carrot-apple-cabbage is my favorite--and freeze it in pint jars. I also make my own beef and chicken broth which I freeze in pint jars. I mainly use my dehydrator to dry jerky and make yogurt. After I blanch the milk at 160 degrees cool it to 120 and add the starter which I buy at the health food store, I put it in the dehydrator at 100 until it thickens. I can pickled veggies. okra, green "dilly beans" jalapenos but not cucumbers. They always go mushy on me and I won't use alum. I also make saurkraut in a five gallon crock and can that. We have an unheated storage building that we don't allow to freeze. I buy bushels of apples and sweet potatoes in the fall and store them out there. And this year I have a basket of butternut squash that I raised. Potatos go under the bed in the house when we dig them in July and usually last until the next Jan. Onions I dry and braid and hang on nails on the glassed porch. They usually last only til Sept or Oct. Wish I had a root cellar, and a greenhouse, but I make do. Comments (23)It's said to be more useful if applied in the autumn Dan, for that very reason. Nutrients have all winter to break down. Part of the ideal, whether spring or autumn, is not necessarily focusing on feeding the plants, but rather feeding the soil. Feed to the soil life, which is in much more abundance if not tilled, and they feed the plants all the mineral and nutrients they need, that is otherwise harder for the plant to get in the soil when tilling due to less of that soil life, thus the need for more of those nutrients in regular feeding schedules. You COULD just use a thick, heavy mulch of primarily hay and leaves or some other organic matter, and I am doing that as well as the compost, but the compost provides a stronger start for a brand NEW garden due to a space to sow seeds into, transplant plants into, as well as give a quick feed to the soil life. Not to mention it's also full of soil life, which, if taken care of, can possibly provide some long term nutrients to the plant in a brand new garden as that. Its going to be a very interesting experiment. I have some beds tilled to compare of course. I would recommend checking out Charles Dowding if you are interested. I am largely following a combination of his and Ruth Stout's methods. He has website with bi-weekly updates on his market garden as well as all of the experiments he runs. It's a very neat concept. Of course, he is in the U.K. so a bit different climate, making this an even more adventurous experiment....See Morejerijen
