Can I convert a hard-wired hanging light to a plug in the wall?
Comments (1)The term you are looking for is, "Swag", as in swag lamp, and they are still available. http://www.target.com/gp/search/175-5206377-8196249?field-keywords=hanging%20lamp&AFID=google&CPNG=Lighting&LNM=hanging_lamp&LID=13552799&ref=tgt_adv_XSGT0629 http://www.nextag.com/swag-lamp http://www.lightingfx.com/cat--Pendants--pendants?source=google&gclid=CJH18Mj7-5YCFQkiagodsjsGXg...See MoreNeed advice on installing dual fuel range/ plug or hard-wire?
Comments (5)120/240v receptacles have different pin configurations to help ensure that larger appliances are served by correctly sized electrical service. A 40-amp receptacle might as well have a label on it saying, "I am wired for fixtures needing a 40-amp circuit." While putting a 40-amp receptacle and cord on a 30-amp circuit may not cause a problem in actual operation (as long as the applicance really needs only 30 amps), it is a poor practice, IMO, if only because it may cause confusion and/or misuse in the future. I believe the wire from the circuit box is 30amp. Why not eliminate guesswork and check the breaker size and wire guage (#10 for 30A, #8 for 40A and #6 for 50A)? If you're replacing a "standard" electric oven/range, the circuit is more likely to be 50- or 40-amp, but who knows? Your electrician should be qualified to determine this and install the correct receptacle....See MoreMicrowave wiring to outlet box with no face plate
Comments (10)I see I was too brief and got spanked because my comment was easily misinterpreted. I didn't mean detach the box and push it into the wall void. I meant build a recessed area of the wall and install a box (or the box) back behind the plane of the recessed area. No problem with code, but not trivial depending on how the cabinet is mounted, how the existing box is mounted, and where the box's cable is tied down. A clock box may not have the depth needed for the microwave oven plug, which is larger than that used by a clock and which has a stiffer cord. But the idea is good and there may be suitable units out there, including recessed panels intended for wall-mounted TVs.
