FUYU Persimmon tree dropping all it's buds :( What's wrong?
Comments (7)Well, no, that's not true, all my trees are in pots including the persimmons, and 2 of my 3 persimmons fruited the first year after I planted them. Since you only took a picture of the pot and not the branches, it's hard to say, but the tree is probably too small to carry 30 fruit. And the pot in the photo is very small, my trees are in 1/2 wine barrels. So it could be dropping fruit because it is stressed from heat or cold or small pot size, or because it is trying to keep the right amount of fruit for its size, or because you are overwatering it. But don't be too unhappy, your tree is better off because persimmons will over-set fruit. Mine did and it snapped at the base because I hadn't thinned and left too many fruit on it, it got too heavy, and instead of dropping fruit, the tree trunk just split. Comments (7)I rec'd this response for you from Library Hort., Univ. WA just today... Though we canÂt diagnose plant problems by phone/email, early autumn frosts can inhibit flowering and not all buds are equally affected. "Autumn frosts: These can lead to damageÂ.if they either occur in early autumn or immediately after a late season warm spell. Continental climates with extremes of heat and cold are more likely to suffer sudden temperature changes than those with maritime climatesÂ.A sudden temperature drop will catch a plant before it has had a chance to reach maximum hardiness and it may suffer accordingly, even if normally perfectly able to withstand such a temperature in mid-winterÂ..Speed of ripening varies considerablyÂ.There is also a variation in the hardiness of flower buds compared to foliage and growth buds. Commonly, flower buds may be as much as 10 F. less hardy than foliageÂ." (Source: "The Cultivation of Rhododendrons," by P. Cox, 1993, p. 119-120). On the other hand, there might be something unusual about your friendÂs particular location. (There is some evidence that winter drought could affect flower buds in this way though not likely in Illinois.) He/she might want to call a local Master Gardener and ask whether theyÂre aware of anything abnormal. To locate Master Gardener clinics in various Illinois counties, go to http://www.extension.uiuc.edu/mg/ui-hort-links.html " Since it appears your buds are not going to open, how would you feel about sacrificing one to slice open and see if the inside evidence will tell you anything, i.e. if it may have been frozen.......See MoreCamellia buds stop blooming
Comments (1)Camellia bud drop occurs when the plant is either getting too much or too little water or the temperatures are changing up/down a lot. Other times when the temps change and stay cold, they can just stop blooming and restart a month or more later. Flower buds in general are more sensitive to temperature and moisture issues than leaves so you could see a plant stop blooming and still leafing out new leaf growth. Try watering when the potting mix starts frying out as opposed to just daily. You can also place the pots where the air/wind does not dry them out quickly. As for the temperatures, you can try to monitor the temperatures to see how much they fluctuate and find a location where they do not swing too much....See MoreBud drop as well as wrong name
Comments (9)Hello Marsha and Bill, I can't capture it on a picture but there is a very faint thin red edge to the reverse of the petals so I know it isn't Celadine and it has been grown all through the winter inside the house where the sun isn't hot so perhaps you may be right. I had left it indoors to enjoy the flowers and it obviously isn't happy as the flowers drop within moments of opening so I've placed it with the others into the greenhouse. Hope this cures it but I'm puzzled as the lovely red one I had flowering last year in the same conditions indoors held the flowers for days even weeks. Hazel....See MorePatty W. zone 5a Illinois
