Effect of rain on 5:1:1 and gritty mix fertilizer program
Comments (4)Personally, for my plants that are outdoors, which include my bonsai trees, jades & succulents, peppers, and a few others, I try to shelter them from too much rain to avoid leeching. But, I don't think it's too big a deal unless you are getting heavy rain, and often. In order for a lot to be leeched, you'd have to have significant rain, somewhere in the inches range. I prefer to follow a maintenance fertilizing schedule, with a small dose every time I water. I also use FP 9-3-6, so I add 1/4tsp per gallon, as directed in the bottle. I have a 2 gallon watering can, so I'll use a plastic syringe to measure out 1/2tsp of FP, squirt it into my empty can, then go to my rain water storage barrel and pump in water, which mixes it up good. Using this schedule for fertilizing, you are applying a small, usable dose every time you water, so it can offset any effects of natural rain leeching. As for you watering practices, to each their own, but I don't follow a schedule. I water as needed, to prevent any overwatering problems. Joe...See MoreGritty Mix / 5:1:1 - Newbie Questions
Comments (8)Thank you for the help! I found Reptibark for $13.50/24qt. I think I'll wait for it to go on sale at Petsmart and compare. There seems to be a little less than a handful of Turface distributors in the local area. The rest are over 70 miles away. I'll call around and see if any nearby locations stock it or if they could order it. Laura, I live in southside Hampton Roads. Oddly enough, I've driven by the Southern States store on S Military Hwy so many times and never given it a thought until you mentioned it. I had no idea what Southern States was. I'll plan a visit the next time I'm out that way. I'll also plan a visit to the hydroponics store (can't remember the name) in Virginia Beach. I'm growing Desert Roses and Plumeria from seed this year! So far, the Desert Roses are in Miracle Grow cactus mix. They seem slightly more happy now, although, they are very slow growing. The plumeria have recently exploded in growth, but due to having been under a shaded porch for a few days of storms, I think they might have suffered a bit or need repotting....See MoreFor Jessica and anyone else that is interested 1.1.1 gritty mix.
Comments (42)Soil-less is hydroponics. Organics is a scam. Chemical fert is salts. Organics need to be broken down to the same salts that chemical fertilizer is made of before plants will absorb them. i have no problem with organics but it's not better than chemicals. Urine is organic feces is organic dead rotting animals is organic household ammonia is organic anything grown with artificial light, even just sprouted seeds, is not organic. Organic trees can be non organic trees fed organics only for a year. So something like grapefruit that takes 15 months to grow can start growing on chemicals, switched over, and be sold as organic....See MoreAl's 5:1:1 Mix vs. Al's Gritty Mix for Tropical Fruit
Comments (5)Yes you can, and in the short run 5-1-1 in may actually perfom better than the Gritty mix. But it will wear out quicker (break down) than the gritty mix. I tend to think of annuals going in the 5-1-1 mix, and perinnials in gritty mix. If you are going to be up-potting in a couple of years go with what you have. Either are a better choice than most anything you can find in most garden centers. Gritty mix makes future repots a dream, tip the pot over and you have bare roots.. Grading the pine bark is not fun, I hate it! A major concept of the gritty mix is based on particle size, larger particles have less surface area (by volume) and thus less water retention. 1/4 to 1/8 inch seems to be the optimal size, although due the screening process of pine bark and the thin strips I will let most 1/2 and under get in the mix (under 1/8 is not good either). If you are looking for Turface MVP check a local irrigation supply house, the stuff was designed for baseball diamonds so look in that direction. The dust is not good for the mix (particle size) The gran-i-grit is intended for chickens to help them digest grains. There are many other products other than gran-i-grit that will perform just as well. Look to a local farm supply house for the rock. Rock dust is not good for the mix (particle size) Gypsum is available at the big box home improvements stores. Gritty does dry out quicker than potting soil so you do need to water a bit more often. It is extremely difficult to overwater with gritty mix, that includes mother nature overwatering. Root rot is probably the number one killer of potted plants. After water, air is the most important thing you can give roots (most plants), more important than fertilizer. Gritty mix excels at this without drying out the root system. Gritty mix is heavy stuff, an advantage of heavy is the pot is less likely to tip from heavy winds. Al is a smart guy, it is such a simple concept....See Morepip313
