black leaf-tips on new rose
Comments (7)Sounds like you have both the disease blackspot, and leaves damaged by a)chemical burn from using two different sprays in one week and/or b) drought damage and/or c) fertilizer burn on newly planted roots. Daily sprinklings isn't good for roses. You need to soak them long enough to get the whole root area wet, and then wait for that water to drain off or be used up before watering again. That usually means not every day. Every few days, depending on soil type and weather. You're right to water early in the day, but you're probably watering too short and too often. Roses need about an inch of rain or sprinklers every week. David Austen roses are very susceptible to blackspot. That's life. Blackspot can't be killed once it sets in, you have to spray regularly, before you see it, to prevent it. Only use one fungicide at a time. Two in one week is too much. More is not better. You can damage plants by misusing fungicides and insecticides. And make sure the plants are well watered the day before spraying, to avoid burning them with the chemicals. I also don't spray when the daytime temp is going to go over 85 degrees as plants can burn in hot temps. Leave the rose alone for now. It needs all its leaves on it to prepare for winter, even if they're damaged. The rose will drop them itself if it's necessary. No fertilizer this late in the game, and it's best not to fertilize newly planted plants anyway. Start anew in spring, with fertilizer and preventative fungicides....See MoreNo new growth and brown leaf tips
Comments (5)Thanks for the info cuddlyotter! I do have it in a pot with a drainage hole. Noted on the water hold off until more growth appears. I think I read somewhere that some people put there new bulbs in plain water to revive it so maybe I was thinking that when I first watered it. When I bought it, it already had a lot of good looking intact roots. I pulled off the dead/dry ones leaving just the plump white ones. I guess I just got a bit of gardener envy when I see posts where people are getting an inch of growth a day and my poor guy hasn't even seen a centimeter in a week! ha I have another question for you if you don't mind pertaining to lighting. I live in a East facing house blocked in on the North/South sides by equally as tall houses and my West window is currently still blocked by major tree foliage (darn things leaves are still full and green!) So until my lighting situation get's better is it okay to put it under artificial lighting? I currently have it on my kitchen countertop under the overhang of my cabinets that have recessed lighting underneath them. So currently it's about 10 inches away from the light source. Is this okay? Thanks so much for your help! ces797...See MoreOne growth tip cutting, lost the growth tip...
Comments (11)I belive all those little "eyes" can grow new branches if left after the top breaks, so you might get 3 or four branches coming out below the break. Just be carefully not to touch any fragile new buds. ( also, I'm not a pro, my plants are now 4 days in my care, but with no suicides yet.)...See MoreEcheveria Black Prince with lower leaf tips that are crispy and black
Comments (15)Jayvee That is very nice set-up for your plants! Back to 'Black Prince': *It is potted little too low in the pot - there is lots of space between top level of the soil and top of the pot, plant is sitting too much inside. While not a huge problem, this decreases air circulation slightly, especially in hot and perhaps more humid climate. Every little thing adds up... *There is no need for such large pot. It holds too much soil, and if it's not so well draining - too much moisture for too long. *New plants should be acclimatized to good sunlight - usually, it is difficult to know where was plant before the purchase. Most succulents like full sun, but from the color of your plant (quite a bit of green in the center) it looks like it spent some time just prior to you buying it in lower light (this plant is typically have dark color thru-out). It is best to put plant in semi-shade for few days, moving it into more and more sunlight gradually (every 3-5 days or so). *Well-draining potting mix and drainage holes in container are important - plant could be watered well when needed, and extra water will drain. Whatever sits in saucer about 20-30 min after thorough watering should be disposed off. Rina...See MoreChris Koster
