Mango tree dying

Hi everyone,

I planted a mango tree from seed around 1 year ago, first in a small pot, then moved it to a bigger pot (around 6months ago) and it was going well till around 2 month ago. All of a sudden the leaves started browing up, first the ones in the bottom, and then falling off.

Also as you can see from the picture the top is now brown, around 2/3 weeks ago it was good though.

So i really wanted to know if someone know the reason for this happening?

I first thought it was overwatering but i stopped watering for a while and it continued.

Then i thought it was the other plants, in the same pot, but i didnt found anything in the internet saying something so i guess its not.

And finally what i thought and still think it might be is over fertilizing, since when i transplanted it, around 6 months ago, i added quite a lot of hummus from vermicompost and maybe its that.

Any help would be appreciated

Remove the weeds under it for one. I think it wants more sun and warmth. I would move it to where it can bask in warmth...the old leafs are goners...but if you keep it watered while its out in sun the new flush will look better..and better.

They are actually chili pepper plants next to it but i'll plant them somewhere else, cause the mango tree really was better before they were planted there. Since the summer is coming i'll also put the pot outside so it gets more sun.

It looks like it was really fried on that hot day.I'd take it out of the full sun for awhile,not complete shade,kind of dappled light if possible and gradually give more light. What's the potting mix? Brady

well .... i would have transplanted it when it was without leaf ... or in VERY EARLY SPRING .... when it had months to grow roots before the heat of summer hit ... next issue.. most trees ... [cant say i am a mango expert though] prefer a good drink and then no standing water in the roots ... so they prefer a soil that is very high in drainage.. very loose .. and NOT high in peat.. which retains water ... so what did you fill the barrel with??? also. if i had no choice in timing.. i would have transplanted it.. and put it in full shade for a couple weeks to a month.. while the roots started pumping again.. before i stuck it back in full sun ... unless mango is somehow unique... a lot of trees will releaf if everything else is proper .... you need immediate shade.. then we have to figure out the soil and watering issues ... good luck ken ps: drainage holes in the bottom of the barrel???

Bit hard to work out from the photos what exactly is happening. The best I can make of it is that some species of wood boring grub is in the tree. Could be wasp or beetle larvae. I don't know which ones you might have there but probably best you check with your local agricultural department. Termite damage can also look like that but do you have termites there? If it were here I'd say Mastotermes darwiniensis, but not in Singapore.

Wikipedia does have a article on this, it does give some suggestions like proper mulching. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytophthora_cinnamomi I remember reading elsewhere that while you can't control whether or not fungus exists you can control some of the factors for when it spreads. Like any life form it needs the right environment to thrive. Temperature, food, and water in the right quantities being the chief components of outbreaks. Eliminate one of the three, and you can eliminate an outbreak. At least in lawns, fungus likes high nitrogen environments. Excessive water is another component that you can have some control over. You really can't do much about temperature. I'd say to try reducing the amount of fertilizer in the soil as the rainy season approaches. Then after it is over, resume. You also may want to try fungicides leading into the rainy season as well, even when it is not a visible problem. You may be able to put a dent in the population before it has a chance to spread. You are never going to be able to kill it off completely, but you may be able to make it manageable. Tons of assumptions and suggestions here, take with a grain of salt. Good luck.
