My first bloom on my first antique rose!
Comments (9)Reines has bloomed! :) It smells so wonderful! Ingrid, I have 2 antiques and then an Easy Does It, Strike it Rich, 2 knock outs and a tea rose. First year they're all in the ground so it's taking longer for them to bloom but so much fun coming home each day and seeing what treat my garden has in store. :)...See MoreWhat's Blooming in Your Garden - a Photo Thread - June 2014
Comments (74)PankajT: So where's your new thread? I think it would be very useful for a lot of people who may hesitate to post, and there's always something new to learn for the more experienced gardeners. As Steve said, you can go to the main New England Gardening page and look at the very top for a link to post a message. Or you can go to the same page and scroll all the way to the bottom past a lot of white space and get to a box that works the same. You don't even have to retype your message since you've already posted. You can use the edit post feature and copy what you wrote here, and then paste that in the new thread. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Back to the blooming thread - I'm getting dizzy with all the beautiful pictures and the succession of new flowers appearing every day! Each garden seems to be on a different schedule, and so is mine. My first daylilies! Hemerocallis 'Orangeman' I just bought a bunch of these on sale this spring from Old House Gardens, and wasn't expecting anything this year (little bitty plants). One of them is blooming already, to my amazement. I love spider-type daylilies. Another daylily, 'Black Eyed Stella', just started also: The first foxgloves/digitalis have started. These planted themselves a few years ago by the rugosa roses and peonies and they match them perfectly, so I've encouraged them to stay. Pink: And white: Viburnum 'Summer Snowflake" is taking off now, while the doublefile viburnum is fading away. The doublefile blossoms are decorating the ground now. The little Calamintha grandiflora is quietly blooming. Along with the little Sedum kamtschaticum sitting next to the cotoneasters and a yucca. Two of my favorite irises: 'Rustler' and 'Beverly Sills' Claire...See MoreFirst bloom from my first rose (can anyone guess who she is??)
Comments (11)Yes that first bloom is always anticipated! Here is a shrub Iceberg captured from someone’s front yard. Our extra rain gave otherwise neglected plants a boost and the cool weather made all the Icebergs in the neighborhood blush. This one was so spectacular I took a picture. Perspective is looking up....See MoreFirst Couple Blooms of Versigny Rose
Comments (20)I grew Versigny twice in my zone 5a. The most it can survive is 3 winters, and Cynthia (Nippstress in zone 5, loamy Nebraska) grew Versigny several times and it didn't last long for her either. Vesigny didn't last long for Floweraremusic (zone 5 WA alkaline clay). Paul Bocuse is more vigorous than Versigny for Floweraremusic in her dense clay & drier climate. Was it worth it after it died twice in my zone 5a? Yes, Versigny has the BEST FRUITY scent ever among my 150+ fragrant roses. When I grew it in my alkaline clay back in 2013, the scent is pure heaven: delicious apricot pie and delightful floral, better than Evelyn. Later on My 2nd Versigny near the rain-spout with more acidic clay: that lessened its fruity scent. The only 3 scents that made me exclaimed: "WOW !! this is heaven" are Versigny, Mirandy, and Yolande d'Aargon. Versigny is orange in my black-gumbo and dense clay, rather than peachy-pink: I also have Augusta Luis (less petals) and blooms smell moderate fruity (like a ripe nectarine). Versigny smells far better than Augusta Luis and I prefer Versigny scent over Evelyn and Jude the Obscure. Versigny scent is like inhaling apricot nectar, eating a delicious apricot pie, and being in heaven with roses....See Morechris209 (LI, NY Z7a)
