Help with House Plants: Repot? Pot-Up?
Comments (46)I have some questions on same topic if I may; new to this forum, I spent last 4 days reading Al's extremely interesting/educational posts on container growing/soil/water retention etc. I will ask questions about 1 plant at the time (it may take forever since I have about 58 right now inside & they all need help). I just realized that I have tortured my potted plants & am very grateful that so many have survived for so long. I have 2 olive trees, do not have name since they were given to me (1.5yr ago)potted in 6"pots by friend who just divided/chopped off shoots from their original olive (brought abt.45yrs ago from Italy!). they keep it potted in regular potting soil&only advise I got is "do not water too often". I would think that they would do much better in Al's mixes-not sure if 511 or gritty. Do not know anything about olives.(They may be candidates for bonsai? I do not know anything about bonsai). They are growing in spite of present conditions(heavy soil). Planted in 7&8"pots respectively, 53&55"tall.(Don't know how to post pics). If Al or anyone else can give suggestions, will greatly appreciate. I am in Toronto & they are overwintering inside(warm&sunny-65-70*,south window-during day, abt.55*nights). Thank you. Comments (9)My folks had some of these growing beside the house when I was growing up. They were near the pool so they got lots of extra water that we splashed and in those days the gardener washed the walk down with water. Then it became unacceptable to wash down with water anymore and the poor things died for lack of water. What a shame too. They were the biggest I have ever seen and we could actually climb them to get to the second story of the house where there was a little balcony! Each "umbrella" of leaves would have 20 or more giant leaves. It was a remarkable plant. Keep the roots a little on the wet side all summer and it will really thrive....See MoreOne of my fav combo pots today
Comments (91)Purchased pot of Peperomia prostrata about 3 mos ago, and about 2 mos ago added stems of variegated zigzag (Euphorbia tithymaloides) and lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii.) Dracaena marginata & red Ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa) trees with a big air plant wedged between their trunks, sticking straight toward the pic. It has grown a lot of new leaves over the few months I've had it. These trees need repotted so badly. You can see some compromised "indicator" tips in the upper L corner of above pic, a sure sign the roots need attention. This crazy pot has creeping Charlie/Swedish ivy blooming (bottom R corner) and ornamental purslane (Portulaca umbraticola.) Being potted on 8/12 didn't bother these plants at all. Ledebouria bulb is putting up a new bloom stalk....See MoreTree training
Comments (62)An acorn happened to sprout in a mini garden about this time last year, in a perfect spot right at an edge. As soon as it started to grow past the first set of leaves, I cut the tip out & have been constantly picking at its' leaves, tearing them in half. It has not gotten any taller than it was, about 3" tall, and now has 3 branches. The naturally smallish leaves of this species seems perfect to cultivate as a real mini tree in a mini garden. I have no idea how many yrs it will take until it starts to look like a real, shrunken oak tree... An update on the tree from the first post of this discussion. Finally, I think it will be time to take a few cuttings this summer so the canopy is more even at the top....See Morerooftopbklyn (zone 7a)
