What could be doing this to my Coneflowers?
Comments (27)Sow bug, pill bug, I'm not sure there's a difference...we called them potato bugs when we were kids but I couldn't tell you why....I don't remember :) While usually more of a green house pest than garden pest (injurious to seedlings as well as decaying plant material), you seem to have some hungry enough they are feeding on your stressed (need water) plants (- that points to large numbers of them to me). I think it would help if you could clean up leaf and needle debris under the plants behind your coneflowers, I suspect you may have large numbers of the pill bugs there where they are cool and protected during the day. I had a heck of a time with them one year only - I was letting a little rapidly spreading 1" sedum fill in around perennials thinking it made nice groundcover, when what it was making was pill bug habitat. Removing the sedum solved the problem. There is also a flake/granular type bait available, should have a picture of the insects it targets on the container and may be called something like cutworm-pillbug-earwig bait. I'm sure not pet friendly though, and my guess is eliminating their hiding places should take care of them. You could compost the leaf litter/needle debris and return it to your garden later, let it decompose someplace else for now....See MoreLate emergers or dead?
Comments (7)Arrggghhh - I love/hate this time of year!!! So much is showing buds, yet some are holding back. Most of my hostas are showing buds. Only one echinacea is showing a sprout/bud. I bought 2 spireas at HD last Fall, for $2.99 each - one was Snowmound, the other unnamed. Unnamed has lots of tiny reddish flowers on it - gorgeous. Snowmound shows no signs of life. I thought I'd cut it back 'in general', and the first branch was alive, so I've stopped. I guess it needs a little more time. I should update my journal!!! I have 2 forsythia, either side of the front steps - I left them last year so long, I was certain they were dead. Then, in late May, they leaved out. They need to go to a sunnier space...do you think boxwood would do well there, in mostly not sun??? Nancy....See MoreConeflowers Haven't Emerged Yet....
Comments (0)Planted a bunch of Hot Papaya coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea 'Hot Papaya') in August 2015. They grew well and continued to bloom throughout the fall til the frost. After frost, new growth actually started in Fall 2015 and I actually had buds on them around Christmas time, after which we got a very cold frost. This spring, I fertilized everything in my garden (plant tone) and put down mulch. All other plants are up and growing. I know these emerge later and we've had a wonky spring with the weather. At what point do I write them off?...See MoreMy Zeffy hasn't leafed out yet
Comments (35)I’m dealing with the same issue? I have a climber (CanCan variety) and every year it would get bigger and bigger...grew very well..it’s on it’s 4th growing season, and not 1 leaf has sprouted yet?...it’s going along my ugly chain link fence and is now becoming more of an eyesore than the fence at this point! I asked if it looked dead to anyone..and I was told to give it time..and to try and prune some of the damaged canes down until I saw ‘green’ inside...which the entire shrub had green inside (showing it’s not dead) yet still not one leaf...it’s basically June, like ..what’s going on with the climbers?! All my other roses are fully leafed out...these are the only ones. Curious to see if yours ever shows any signs of life soon.....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
