Rainy Day Garden
Comments (13)Elemire, I can see how gardening in cement would be difficult. :)) We all have our negatives, I suppose. At least my plants will never get waterlogged! Pam, sadly, I don't have any hostas. They mostly don't like it here and act like annuals - in other words die or get eaten. Maybe you mean the caladiums. The big green & cream leaves?? Thank you, Florence. I'm glad you like them. Denise & Kathy, I learned that different daylily cultivars bloom at different times of the year: Early Early, Early, Early Mid, Mid, Late Summer and Very Late. The first few years I always bought the big box of bulbs at Sam's Club. Well, it turned out that they were all once blooming, sometimes dormant and always earlier blooming so mine were always done by June. When I heard about a big sale last October (see link), I took a crash course in daylilies on their website which has a pretty extensive online catalog and bought lots and lots, concentrating on later blooming varieties and only evergreen or semi-evergreen. The leaves stay on the evergreen ones all winter whereas the leaves on the semi-ev can disappear. Being in Georgia, I figured this vendor was closer to my climate conditions. They turned out to be a very good vendor, and the fans were large and healthy and made large plants! My Limelight is in its third or fourth year. I bought it locally not knowing the heat zone requirement. So I put it in total shade, and it does fine, but MUCH better with daily watering. The first two years I had no leaves until the end of May!! Now I'm sure that was due to lack of water because this year it started leafing out in March. They're in a very dry bed with trees that suck up every drop of water. I also have a Winky Pinky in there that is just starting to bloom. It will be red and white, is Zone 9, and they say it will take full sun, but all my full sun is occupied with roses. This is the 3rd year for it. It was a tiny slip when I bought it online. Comments (19)Roselee, Such nice colors, feel like taking a stroll in your garden. I have a suprise cantaloupe vine growing. I thought a squash vine came up from the vegetable scrap I threw in my garden. I put a trellis and let the vine grow vertically. I cut one off the plant to get a closer look and thats when I realized it was a cantaloupe. It was not ready yet,I let it ripen for a few days. It was quite good, I am sure it will taste great had I left it on the plant till it was ready. I have some more on the vine and I am figuring out a way to give support to those Cantaloupes. I read old panty hose may work good. Any ideas ?...See MoreSome rainy day photos to share
Comments (11)So lovely. Yes, the greenery is loving the rain. Between the rain and the fertilizer I spread, my grass is growing before my eyes. I wonder what kind of summer we will have. Saturday was a great day for planting, cloudy and cool. I finally got a flat of begonias in the front beds. I usually plant impatiens there but evidently they have a fungus this year and we are not supposed to plant them, so we will see how the begonias do. Many are planting vinca in place of impatiens. All the greens just look so green in this weather, but I hope we get sunshine soon. Nice photos, btw....See MoreRainy ,rainy day.....I guess I'll have to clean house....lol
Comments (11)I have been busy bringing in the plants that I want to keep over the Winter. I brought the two Hibiscus in a couple days ago since the weather guy was warning us of a frost. Today I cut back the Mandavilla and brought it in. Also two large hanging begonias and one Coleus. I've never tried to keep a Coleus, but it was just too pretty to throw out. They are all in the end of the garage where I have an entrance door with windows. Also I dumped some container plants, and took down the deck umbrella and brought it in. I'm right proud of myself!! The weather today has been perfect with sunshine, and temps in the high 60's. S'posed to get some of that rain on Saturday, when the family will be here for my DD's birthday. I hope it will hold off though. Enjoy the weather while we can. Winter is just aeound the bend. Sue...See Morebethnorcal9
