Neither one gives you enough room. In the first one how do you propose to get into the shower? You're going to maneuver around the toilet bowl? Also the person brushing their teeth at the sink closest to the toilet could also do it sitting down?

In the second one you have the same problem with the toilet and the shower. If the door is facing the tub, you only have 2' there. Not enough room to get in and out of the shower. Plus not enough room between the tub and vanity at 30".

cpartist: Thanks for the feedback. What should optimum distances be between different features? For example, how much room should there be between a vanity and tub, or vanity and toilet? And, how large of an opening should a walk-in shower have and how much room should exist between this opening and something like a tub or toilet?

Can you move the door? What about something like this:

I believe your local code will have requirements about clearances around a toilet - you FOR SURE don't want it jammed up against something.

I did think about moving the door. But, the spot at which you've shown the door won't work.

The master bedroom is below the bathroom and I would prefer the door to be between the master bedroom and bathroom. I don't think that moving the door anywhere else along the bottom wall will help much.

Although not my preference, the door could be moved to the bottom of the left wall. This may help the layout -- I will draw it out to see, but then the entrance to the master bathroom will be from our hallway rather than from our master bedroom.

I agree the clearances are too tight between the toilet and the shower in the second version and the toilet and the sink in the first. I'd suggest getting a narrower tub, maybe an alcove type tub. I'd swap the location of the tub and the sinks. Put the tub in the lower right corner and the sinks on the wall where the tub is in the second version.

If you don't want to move the door perhaps jhug's plan would work. When you say you have a walk in shower, are you saying it is totally open to the bathroom, no glass?

is this your current layout ? Do you have the option to move plumbing ? I am assuming you don't want to change anything in the shower...if that's the case, how do you enter the shower now ?

here are 3 ideas without making much change -

Option 1: corner shower door

Option 3:

no door curbless shower. there is a wall separating the toilet area from shower area.

Are you open to moving the door couple of feet - more towards the middle of the bottom wall ? This way, you will have enough space for access. And I think it will look nice :).

Are you concerned about being ADA compliant in the event that either of you end up needing a wheelchair or are mobility impaired?

I think a narrower tub may be the key to making this work. If I did this, I think I could keep the tub near its current location, either placing it horizontally, vertically, or maybe even at an angle. Moving the existing tub to the lower right corner with the current tub deck size won't provide enough clearance for the toilet.

Yes, it is totally open to the bathroom. We may install some glass once everything else is installed.

Our current layout has the tub as shown in Option A and the shower as shown in both options, and the toilet as shown in Option B. Our lower right wall is angled with a small vanity. This wall will be removed so the bottom right is square as shown in the layouts.

Yes, we have the option of moving the plumbing. I think we will be limited on toilet movement since I understand that the toilet should be within 4' of the vent. The vent is about 2' "north" of the toilet. I am not sure if other vents are available.

We enter the shower now by walking between the toilet and tub.

Thank you very much for drawing out all of the other options. I am giving some thought to all of them and will draw out some more layouts using yours and everyone else's ideas. Will hopefully post those later today.

When I looked at this I saw lake view girls last idea. You could put a privacy wall next to the toilet too.

And as asked, are you at an age where you might need to consider being ADA compliant?

I still have a problem with the toilet being so close to either the shower or the sink. I'd be afraid that I'd take a step back and end up falling over the toilet, especially if I had any balance or mobility issues. That's the major reason why I suggested switching the location of the sinks and the tub.

No, we do not need the bathroom to be ADA compliant.

Are you referring to lakeviewgirl's Option 3 or the one after that where the door has been moved?
