Comments (44)We've had our share of snow but nothing like our eastern friends are reporting (and hard in the south although not as deep). But this seems like an unusually cold February. For days on end, the sun melts or evaporates a lot of snow, but there's still plenty and more expected, snow covering this time of year is good. But the daytime temps have been in the 20's for days and forecast for days to come, may hit 30. And the nights have been in the low teens and single digits, a few nights below zero. Nothing like some of the extreme cold we have had even last year. One year it was 18 below for several days, a pipe froze first time in my memory except trailer folks and had to get heat tape and wrap around them. I worry about the car starting, had battery problems last year and this, always ask for extra cold cranking power because my car has to sit outside. Hope that's solved. One battery was bad, and Walmart made it good after I lost my receipt. Somehow the trunk light got left on when it was frozen shut, I popped it, couldn't get it open, then it thawed. Somehow the dome light got left on this winter. I always try to remember the car lights. Now they have some that turn off automatically. Driving in winter here is always a worry especially on highways, the interstate and the like. Main streets are fairly quickly cleared and salted, it's pretty good. I think overall they do a good job, but people always complain. They complain about the side streets but people won't move their cars so the plows can't get in and get it done right, then sometimes they turn to terrible ice which is much worse than driving on snow. Never hit your brakes or use the accelerator if you see ice (black ice you can't see) and can't switch lanes or get around it, lots of accidents, some bad. If it's snow or ice and you have to stop at a stop sign and expecially on a down slope, pump your brakes and go as slow as possible if you see it coming. Shift down if it won't throw your car out of control. Glad you people are being more careful. If you start skidding, you're supposed to turn your wheels in the direction you're skidding, counterintuitive. Had a rough drive on the interstate once, skidded, compensated, skidded the other way, compensated, was skidding for quite a ways like that until I got the car back under control, freezing rain and snow. I did not dare panic, and there was a lot of traffic, missed the exit on account of it and decided safer to go on to the next one....See MoreTHey Came! THey Came THey Came!
Comments (10)THANKS, Jodi and Elizabeth! I have the surgery scheduled for Feb 4. They try to get their patients out within 48 hours so they do not pick up infection in the hospital. To get out, I will need to be able to walk across the room with a walker or crutches and go up 2 steps. Having been through cartilege removal surgeries a couple of times, I have heard that the total replacement is not much worse. They will call me on Friday to tell me what time to show up in the morning. My girlfriend and I are going to a big Garden show In Tacoma the day before, then out to lunch for a blow out, LOL. After that they may as well put me to sleep and get it over with! I will be confined to home for the next month of so, as long as I need any help with housekeeping, or my own care. If I leave home for other then Dr my help will be cut off, so I will count on you guys to keep me entertained. The surgeon is extremely good, and I have talked to a number of people who have done really well under him and see it as a very positive experience. We are starting with the left knee, and will leave the more complicated right knee until fall so I can get my gardening in. Dr says I should be back in the garden by early MArch, so that is a goal I can work toward. This is a new improved form of the surgery where they do not cut through the quad muscle but go in from the side under it, so it heals much faster and without as much pain. I am really looking forward to being able to work without pain in my garden and business...it has been 28 years since this started with tearing the cartilege in my right knee. Tore the left one 7 years ago just walking across flat ground! So I hope to be home to my laptop computer and recliner and have some time between pain med sleepiness, and therapy, by Wed or Thurdays after the surgery. And yes, I am excited about the possibilites of being able to work without pain before long! A goal worth working toward!...See MoreThe sun came out today??(pic)

Comments (11)It was sunny out but a tiny bit chilly. Still, I was able to work in the rose garden. I saw a little yellow butterfly flittering about today while I was out watering! I did a triple take. A butterfly in February??? Planted a new rose bush today - I bought another Rosa, Mirandy. It is a beautiful rose and smells so wonderful. Had to reove a few irises to plant it where I wanted it, so set them out in two new areas. I also dug up one clump of Day lilies (wine with red edges and yellow centers) that had spread and become crowded against the new path I built in early January. I divided it in two pieces and replanted them in nice soil in two other spots. Dug up some of the blue Larkspur seedlings that have come up in the path between the stepping stones. Reset them in with some pink and pink-yellow blend roses and pink and blue irises. Got them all watered in. It is looking nice already. Sowed white and blue nigella in front and chocolate-vanilla nigella at the end of the row. Sowed Pink Tutu in one place and Black Penny in another along the new path. Sprinkled white Baby's Breath hither and thither between the Pink roses. I am fencing the rose garden to keep out the chickens and small wildlife. Just need two more sides to complete the fencing. Gotta get more posts. I'd would like to have picket, but will make do with what I have on hand. Besides, wire will last longer. It sure felt good to be digging in the dirt again....See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
