Any young ladies feeling like you don't have a voice?
Comments (29)Chiming in to say 1) probably yes because you are female (not necessarily just because you are young) 2) we have a problem in our society in general of poor workmanship and lack of ethics as well Advice: 1) do a lot of research before getting your bids and signing a contract--this site has been very helpful to me, as well as asking neighbors, co-workers, checking with the BBB, doing a google search, etc. 2)Get a good digital camera and take pictures of the entire process-before during and after, and make sure that they know you are documenting. Also document your conversations. Half of these workmen won't blink an eye at lying about what happened, what was done etc. They convince themselves that they are justified in some way. 3) Make sure that you know multiple ways to contact the contractor--phone, email, etc, so you can get around the "I didn't get your message" excuse. 4) If you can have a male around at the time of signing the contract or even the estimate do so. They don't have to be related, just just need to appear like they know something and have an interest in the situation 5) when or if you do have to dispute something, remember that thanks to your documentation and contract, you control the situation and the paycheck (you haven't paid them until you are satisfied, right?) and don't have to put up with it. Continue to state with a friendly-to-neutral voice and demeanor what needs to be fixed and why, and DON'T let the contractor distract you with red herrings (like "I shouldn't have to fix this hole in the wall because you changed the paint color") and excuses ("Grandma was sick") Remember, you don't need them to LIKE you, and they don't care if you like them. About the cabinets: I hope you have some sort of warranty. I would be asking for a refund and opening a complaint with the BBB....See MoreGive voice to your New Year's Resolutions
Comments (31)Mine go like this: 1) Decrease shopping at Target, and when I have to go, only go to the diapers, formula, milk aisles 2) Save more money, and stop wasting it on frivolous stuff. My goal for the year is to triple my savings account. 3) Lose weight- I know it is cliche to say this at New Years, but I've got to get rid of the baby weight from baby #2, I was half way there when I found out I was pregnant with baby #3, and now he's 6 months old, I need to stop making excuses because this is not a healthy weight for me and I feel it. 4) Be more patient with my children. I love them to pieces, but sometimes I lose my patience after hearing mommy, mommy! for the 9,000th time in a day 5) Go to Italy to visit our extended family. DH's Nonna will not be on this earth much longer, and we want her to meet her great grandson. This resolution also includes, conquer my fear of flying and dying in a plane crash. 6) And my final, is to have more sex. I read somewhere last year about a bunch of people that committed to doing it every day and it did wonders for them, An added benefit is it will burn more calories, and it keeps DH happier, and keeps us closer. I am not telling him this, I'm just gong to do it. Sorry it's so long, I've probably bored all of you....See MoreWhat do you have your flat screen tv in/on
Comments (66)Parma, I obviously misread the specs on the bob mackie, sorry! You are right about the chinoiserie, I would prefer an accent piece and I really don't want the tv to be a visual focal point (though of course it will be because it IS the tv). You are also right that I am trying to take it on as a whole room and that is overwhelming to me. I am feeling pressure from lots of directions and it isn't helping me to think clearly. (ps.. are you going someplace fun?) Deborahnj- thanks for the view of my tv on a higher stand. That helps. My big concern though is that my room is narrow and the viewing distance is about 10'.. still, I think we'll be fine. bbstx - you crack me up because that's how I'd describe the doohickey too-- but I do know what you are talking about and I'll probably get the same thing (it's an infrared redirector or something?? maybe?). Thanks for the tip!...See MoreWeek 144 - To have or Not To Have - TV in the kitchen?
Comments (30)I am happy to now have room in my kitchen for a TV. I do a lot of cooking, and it's nice to have one there while I'm prepping, cooking, and cleaning. I live alone, so I'm the only one to affect my decision. Right now I'm just sitting mine on my island so I can see it cooking and prepping, though it's behind me when I'm at the sink or loading the dishwasher. It was sitting unused in my bedroom (I thought I would want one there, but I didn't), so now it's finally getting some use. It's one of 2 TVs in my home - the other is a 38" in the living room. I haven't had cable in years, so the TV only connected by a power plug and a USB plug for the Chromecast I use with it.....and that means it will be easy to move around, or away, should I want the space for other people or things. Actually, there's a 2' long piece of counter next to my fridge that would be a good fit; it's the space where I roll out pastry (custom height), but I don't use it for that very often. I haven't really gotten around to decorating much; I've only really been able to use this space in the last month. I'm even still waiting for the cushion to go on the bench behind the table. It looks really empty in this picture - I never really thought of it until I see it here....See Moresocks
