We just built a small pond, need ideas on what we can do with it
Comments (5)Welcome to the world of ponding! About the lilies, I've kept lilies in 18 - 19 inches of water and they do just fine. In fact, my hardies thrived at that depth. I've also seen tropicals kept at that depth, and they did fine too. They must be pretty adaptable. That's way too shallow and too small for koi, but I think you can keep a few goldfish or mosquito fish if you help shade the water for them in the deeper end to keep it cooler. The lily pads will do a good job of that. A pot with something tall that has broad leaves like taro or lotus placed on the south or west end of the pond would also be a good idea. I was going to say that water hyacinth will do well there, but I'm thinking that they may be illegal in Arizona. They do an excellent job of shading the water if they're legal there. Parrots feather is another option. Pretty much any sun-loving marginal should do well in your pond. Do you have a filter or aeration? Oxygen levels are lower in extremely warm water, so don't overstock your fish. You might also need to add an airstone when temps start getting close to 100....See More1st Cats any idea what they are?
Comments (6)Hey Sylvia what are the butterfly rules? There's only about 8 or 9 of them plus they're my 1st cats so I plan on letting them live no matter what they turn out to be. Hey I planted the milkweed to get cats. I did have a question I noticed on the website that someone posted on this site: ttp://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/caterpillars that the monarchs are smooth without spikes so I was wondering do they start out looking kind of furry and become smooth later on or do you think that they are the Milkweed Tussock moth cats? Comments (30)Looks like I'm having this conversation with myself now! Anyway, last night I got to interact with "Henry" again. I put a generous serving of food on a paper plate and put it out in the bushes where his area usually is. I went back inside for about 5 minutes... just long enough to plate myself a slice of cheesecake. Then went out with the flashlight to find not only Henry but another baby grey tabby chowing down fiercly! The new arrival is feral... it ran as soon as I shone the light on the feast. Henry gave me a HISS as I approached. I sat down right beside him and started petting him on the head and back. Even scratched his ears. He didn't even acknowledge my presence... just continued munching. He must have been STARVING. As soon as he finsished the food (3 minutes flat 2 cups of dry food was GONE) he gave a final hiss and darted off into the woods. I guess I've got a routine going now and I will just supply food until I can gain the trust of the poor thing! I didn't hear a single purr so I am assusming survival is more important than interaction at this point. Since there is a white collar (no ID tags!) and the cat ate in front of me I'm assuming he's owned a human before... just wonder if he ran away or was dumped!...See MoreWe move, but what do you do with your grown kids stuff?
Comments (4)Ask the kids what they plan to do with the stuff when you move. It's their problem, not yours. My mom kept some of my stuff for years after I left home. I didn't know she had it, and didn't want it. If your kids have to deal with the stuff themselves, they may discover they don't really care about it either....See MoreRudebekia
