Can this work? Need advice on coordinating countertops.
Comments (13)It will absolutely work. I've been on GW for almost 3 years and have seen kitchens with mixed countertop materials. Frequently the mix is on an island or penninsula (I'm talking about where materials actually butt up to each other). I'll try to find some of them and post them for you but I'll probably not have time until tonight. The first 2 that come to mind are RHome410 and ElizPiz's. RHome's doesn't have the different countertops up against each other but it still might help since she has 3 different materials (stainless, laminate, and wood). The stainless and laminate are separated by a wall. Her link is below. ElizPiz has 2 different materials on her island (and a stunning kitchen). I don't know how to post 2 working links below, so here's the link you can copy and paste: https://plus.google.com/photos/114340186129992852319/albums/5329422431124238225/5385569862608492866?banner=pwa#photos/114340186129992852319/albums/5329422431124238225/5385569861181095554 Here is a link that might be useful: RHome's lovely kitchen...See MoreLove your soapstone countertop? Comments (63)Thank you so much Pluckymama. That is a great help (and you are right, they do look great). I am off tomorrow to see a few more slabs of SS (Minas and Beleza) and will take another look at the Nordic Black. The Mumbai Grey SS that I took a sample of is doing the same watermark thing you are experiencing (and wow, the mineral oil only holds for a day at most). Soapstone International has told me it has to do with the finish (which they 400 grit, but that sounded kind of crazy considering). As I was thinking about the watermark issue, I just wondered if anyone has tried carnuba wax? I say this because it is used on cars (stay with me), and on the glossy coating of candy (like M&Ms). My thinking? Food grade, OK. And if it buffs to the point that it protects car exteriors, it is obviously durable....See MoreCountertop Dilemma -- Quartz or Quartzite?
Comments (6)I disagree with Navy Momma. I wouldn't put anything on any countertop without a trivet other than wood and stainless steel. I've had Cambria in my kitchen in the past which I loved (previous kitchen refresh) and now have FBQ in the kitchen. In reality, the Cambria was better as far as durability and I highly recommend that brand in particular. It's also made in my home state so maybe I am a bit biased. When we did our full gut remodel of the kitchen, we opted for the FBQ because I found the perfect slabs, colorwise. There can be a lot of variation in the FBQ. In the past I have said it's been awesome, however, in full disclosure, there is etching. I don't care. It happened about a year or so after installation as far as I can tell. I'm the only one that can see it. It's still a beautiful stone and I love it! If I were in your position, it would be based on price and finding the perfect slab in both the quartzite (if you're okay with etching) and the quartz....See MoreNeed kitchen advice - new appliances and counters
Comments (0)Hello! I have lurked here for a while and enjoy everyone’s projects and am amazed at the knowledge and helpfulness from everyone. Now we are planning to make changes to our kitchen and I need your advice. This started when we decided to get a new oven with a proof option because my husband often bakes bread. Then a new cooktop sounded like a good idea, and a new downdraft to go with it. So, of course, we have to get new counter tops for the cooktop to sit on! My husband does not want to paint or replace the cabinets. We are not doing this to sell the house. We’d like to make it the way we like it. We know what we like when we see it, but are not creative enough to imagine it. That’s why we are asking for advice. The current cabinets, Subzero refrigerator, sink, and faucet will stay. The dishwasher is a Miele which is working fine, but it would be nice to have a new quieter dishwasher and get all the ‘remodeling’ done at the same time. An oven with a French door or side opening door is appealing, but not required. We have seen the Wolf appliances and like them. We’ve also seen Thermador and liked those, but I don’t have model numbers. I am open to other brands and models, and want quality that won’t break. The appliances don’t all have to be the same brand. These are the models we are considering: Wolf SO30TE/S/TH oven Wolf CG304T/S cooktop Best Cattura down draft (1st choice) with exterior motor. Wolf DD30 down draft (2nd choice) I need a lot of advice on the counters. We like the Cambria marble collection. We don’t like a lot of movement or large pattern in the counter, but do like small veining. We don’t know whether light/white or dark/black would go better with the oak cabinets, but we are leaning toward the light/white counters. We’ve seen these: Cambria Swanbridge Silestone Eternal Statuario Silestone Iconic Black I would like a ‘window sill’ or ‘shelf’ made from the counter material across the bottom of all 4 of the windows behind the sink, like a wide window sill. But don’t know what is possible or how to describe what I want. The sink/faucet is pretty close to the window directly behind it. I am attaching current photos of the kitchen. Thank you for your advice! http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj539/mg999999/IMG_0996_zpssgslxeqi.jpg http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj539/mg999999/IMG_0988_zpsbxmvv25y.jpg?1525547129078&1525547129468...See Morejust_janni
