Comments (21)joepyeweed - Actually, that was me. I was NOT PROMOTING the item, I was simply asking if anyone had one and how they liked it before I bought one. And, everyone complained and attacked me. Since I actually DO have one of these - not the pro model - I thought I should comment on the nasty thread you have going here bashing the people who buy them. First of all, the only way it smells is if you fill it with wet stuff and then don't add any browns to it (I use sawdust pellets from Agway for my browns), as with a normal compost pile. Also, I have never once had the unit leak, but I did have it get stuck once in a while when I piled in too many coffee filters or pea pods at the beginning. Granted, there are some things that you can't put in it (such as corn cobs) but it works well for me. Since I have raccoons that love to rip apart my compost pile if I have foodstuffs in it outside I decided to either get a NatureMill composter or stop composting completely. I figured indoor composting was better than no composting. And, before you say it, I looked into worms and they were so not for me. So, before you judge and make nasty comments, you may want to think about how everyone is different and that there is not just one way to make compost. Not everyone can or should be the same in the way they garden, and if this is right for some people so be it. And before someone makes another rude comment about me "promoting" the product, let me repeat that I don't work for the manufacturer, I don't know anyone who does, I don't get a commission from them, I am completely uninvolved with them. I just found out about the product and really liked it and it works for me. Silly me for asking people about it and telling them my experiences with it. I thought this was a forum to exchange ideas, but I guess only if they're the "right" ideas....See MoreNew Gadget Roundup Time!
Comments (38)We received this wine aerator as a gift. https://m.wine.com/product/vinturi-wine-aerator/120451?warehouses=CA&cid=GoogleBase_CSE_120451_Beta&gclid=CjwKEAjwlq24BRDMjdK7g8mD6BASJABBl8n310IPzm54CwZGYb5jIVpe2Mj-rkHdl7ntD2MlAdvEXRoC3Pnw_wcB&mode=xfercomplete Sometimes I have guests do blind tastings - (1) a glass straight from the bottle, (2) a glass poured through the aerator. They prefer (2) about 2/3 of the time. 1/3 of the time they can't tell the difference - but those guests might not be able to tell a California wine from a French wine, so we won't give their opinions too much weight. No one, so far, has preferred (1). If you decant into a carafe then the aerator is unnecessary. I picked this laser-sighted infrared thermometer up on a whim, because I was in Home Depot and it was only $16. http://m.homedepot.com/p/PRO-SERIES-Non-Contact-Infrared-Thermometer-with-Laser-Sighting-12-1-Spot-THERMNC/204262824 Along with enabling all sorts of geeky investigations - have you ever wondered how much hotter your ceiling is than your floor? do cats have the same internal temperature as humans? when your spouse is "steaming mad", is she really? - it has certain cooking uses. Measuring the temperature of a pan. Or of spitting oil that is too scary hot to dip your probe thermometer in. This one is as cheap as they come, and no doubt there are advantages to the expensive models, but save your money and get the wine aerator too. Differences in the emissivity of surfaces limits the accuracy of infrared temperature measurement anyway....See MoreA New Good Gadget Thread--and Cheese
Comments (35)Foodonastump, funny you should ask. I never did use the stirrer thing. Upon inspection I decided that it was too whimpy for anything but the lightest of sauces/batters. A whisk works just fine and doesn't require batteries. The spatuala thermometer has never been used because I can't pull-out the platic strip protecting the battery that powers the thermometer. I tried taking out the battery box, and can't get that out either. Right now it is laying on my side cabinet in hopes that someday the grandson who loves such challenges will come to visit and get it to working. yeonassky: I have a tool called a 'seal breaker'. You use it like a can opener to break the seal on too tight lids and it works every time....See MoreWhat's new? A new food? A new gadget? A new recipe?
Comments (72)CSA's were frustrating years past. Upfront dollars. Pick-ups with minimal hours. (Friday 5-7pm, Saturday's 8-10 am) etc, yada. You snooze, you loose...A good businessman jumps in and makes it more accessible. Farmers are often horrible at interaction and business....take that communication out of the farmers hand...let them farm that they are comfortable doing...and put the business/delivery in the hands of those expert....win-win. Even Coops 15-20 years ago became nasty know-it-alls. Open spice bulk bags, Un-refridgerated vegetables. Pale pasty skin hippies so angry.... I'm not a Facebook person. Just family and a few friends...baby pics😍... A couple groups, thousands in the Misfits groups...(I joined but no time to participate) ...not one person thinks or mentions a greater good for supporting small farmers. No one pats themselves on their back at all. This is not the solution for food desserts or food waste...just a baby step to be more aware of our local food supply. Use the off cuts and waste for stocks, etc... Try new things not available in the area you live... My local CSA is five miles away and brilliant. They opened up for the locals 2020 without membership. Like I've said...it is what I grow so I have no need. Just follow their commitment to the community....See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
