Need suggestions for bed in front of fence
Comments (4)Thanks! Sorry, I attached a photo and it showed on the preview, but somehow it didn't post. I'll try again. * Flower bed faces west * It seems to get a lot of sun * I'm not sure about the soil conditions -- it doesn't appear to have much clay, compared to other parts of our yard. You can't see it in the photo, but it's actually located at the top of a slight incline, so it should have pretty good drainage, I think. Catkim, would you suggest putting the lavender in the back of the bulbs? Interspersing the lavender and poppies, or doing one in front of the other? Does this sort of thing matter as far as how they will grow, or is it just coming down to personal preference? Thanks for the encouragement, I'll give it a shot....See MoreSuggestions for rural road planting with fence
Comments (10)If you are going to have animals, esp. horses, inside the 4-board fence, then red maples should come off your list - the wilted leaves are quite toxic to horses, as are the dead leaves for about a month after they fall. I don't know about cattle. Sugar maples, to my knowledge, are safe. I have seen sweetgums, (Liquidamber) growing in shade, and also hickories and beeches, just to add to your list. With the hickories, it might be worth it to get them from a nut-tree nursery - a few years down the road, when they start producing, you can have a nice treat, if you get them before the squirrels. For the number of trees you will need, it may be worth contacting the VA Dep't of Forestry, as they will sell you a lot of trees pretty cheaply - they will be smaller than other sources, but.... On 20' center planting, I make it to be 50 trees, and on 30' centers. 35 trees. Of course, you may plan to plant them with different spacing, but any way, you will need at least 20 trees....See MoreSuggestions To Hide Pasture Fence In Shade
Comments (3)Thanks for that suggestion esh_ga! I've never heard of Illicium floridanum but then there are many plants I'm not familiar with -- lots to learn. Based on what I've read on the Internet after your suggestion it does sound like Illicium floridanum just might do the job for me. It's certainly worth a try! Thanks again, Jerry...See MoreLooking for plant suggestions for along the fence area. Zone 10
