Does Coast Live Oak grow tall before wide?

I have a coast live oak that I planted about 10 years
ago. It was a decent sized tree before I
planted it, came in a wooden crate container, not just a black plastic
tub. Anyway, I was curious if this type
of tree grows tall before it grows wide.
There are a few thick side-ish growing branches, most of these are
growing more upright than straight out.
The tree doesn't really have any competition for sunlight - only a
couple of mature orange trees nearby that are maybe half it's height, if
that. I'm aware of the concept of co-dominant stems and have been pruning annually
only in small amounts to encourage subordination and avoid the formation of
included bark. I long for it to grow old
and gnarly, but it seems to just be tall and skinny, with a majority of the
branches off the main truck being thin in diameter and droopy. Am I doing anything wrong, or do I just need
to wait another 30 years?
