Worms eating weeds

last modified: 8 years ago

Here's another thing I discovered that worms really like. Occasionally I pull up a few small weeds from my tiny garden and throw them in an old pot off to the side. Because it's been raining so darn much, there's been some water collecting in the pot. I took out a clump of weeds and put it in the worm bin. They had been in the water long enough to get slimy, but not long enough to get that rancid anaerobic smell. Next time I looked in, the worms were happily threading their way all through this clump of slimy weeds. I guess it makes a good worm hangout (they're slimy, it's slimy - luxury!) and contains many tasty microorganism snacks. As a bonus, some soil that's on the roots gets in there too, for the worm gizzards. I'm sure you can't load a worm bin up with weeds, because that would be way too much green, but a few pre-soaked weeds seems like a healthy addition to the ecosystem.
