My solution to pine bark fines for Al's (Tapla) 5-1-1 mix
Comments (18)Great post. I tried this method this past weekend. Relative to the lawn mower method of chopping up large pine bark chunks, I found this method to be cleaner (it doesn't shoot pine chunks out the sides like a mower will), a bit slower than the mower, and produced a lot more fine particles. I have a high speed Toro leaf blower/mulcher with a metal impeller. A large percentage of the particles coming out felt like fine compost, and a large number of chunks went through looking unscathed, so I didn't get the mix of particle sizes that I was hoping for. I suppose if I had a 1/8" screen, I could have sifted out some of the fine stuff. As it was, I got about 3 gallons of material, and made a side batch of 5-1-1 to try with some peppers, but I didn't mix it in with the rest of my 5-1-1....See MoreRepotting into 5-1-1 after just planting into gritty?
Comments (1)my first thought is.. they are stressed from bare rooting/storage ..... shipping .. planting.. and you ought to give them some time to get over it .. especially since they are leafing out right now.. which is a stress itself ... i would doubt that minor differences in media mix are all that big a deal ... when it all boils down ...its how you water.. based on your mix .. that is the key ... and since you are experienced ... you ought to know to let them near dry before watering again ... basically not growing them as bog plants ... so i would probably wing it.. and then decide if i would want to repot them in fall ... or better yet.. plant them in the ground ... or at least heal them in.. i dont recall where you are.. and whether winter pot storage is an issue ... i would hold the pots in full bright shade ... or so the pot itself is in shade.. so it doesnt heat up ... your base problem.. is that of most of us.. the more you know or learn ..... the more you worry ... lol .. when i got to that point.. i just started winging it ... ken ps: e.g. .. you could literally use mother earth in the pot .. and it would work.. if you could properly maintain water ... so i dont see why a little dust should be life threatening .. if you just water properly .......See MoreRepotting small plants into 5-1-1mix
Comments (9)Caitlin, I don't mind that the plant comes apart, that's how I get all the mix off of it. Also, I grow them in plastic, not clay using pebble trays underneath. Tho' you didn't ask, I'm concerned how deep that pot is, too deep IMO, might lead to trouble, tho' now in 5-1-1 mix I don't know. Since you'd like to experiment, why not take several small tip cuttings, root them in water & then you'll have more to can pot up in future, just in case. Elena, If you're still here, I apologize for misunderstanding what you meant. But I also think 2 different types of soil, as you suggest, would be trouble 'cause they'd drain unevenly and at different rates IMO. I guess my concern is mostly when I originally buy it. I want to remove every last bit of the peaty mixes they tend to come in, when I buy locally, inexpensively like at Big Box Stores. Also neglected to say what a beautiful Peperomia that is, so pristine & perfect looking! Is that P prostrata?...See MoreAl's 5-1-1 mix, repotting, and sudden yellowing, wilting leaves -
Comments (5)Hello, Thank you for your comments. I'll try and find some pics of the leaves I made before plucking them. I can already see a few of the other leaves starting to yellow again. D: Ken - So I repotted them 2 or maybe max 3 weeks ago? For some odd reason I *really* started noticing it last week, 1.5 weeks ago - when they appeared to all collectively say fare well Al - I did not include a fertilizer product. The mix did indeed seem damp when I opened the bag. I thought I had for sure included dolomite lime, I think sth sth called Dolomitkalk in German (will re-check the bag name). Now I'm unsure about everything though and worried I didn't mix it right. I made two big 5-1-1 mix batches. UGH Nik...See MoreDave
